(Tag) Heuer Super Pro

Post by Dedalus » Thu Sep 25, 2014 6:14 pm

I know there are a few guys here who have it and was wanting thoughts and pics on how it wears. While I've been looking for my next vintage piece, this neo-vintage classic has grown on me. Sort of beautiful in its ugliness type of crush I've developed.

Anyway, it goes against my plans to go after smaller pieces but who ever said this hobby was driven by rational decisions.

Any and all input would be great, thanks.

I like it's cousin, the Zodiac version.

Yeah, they'd make a nice pair, though I think I'd tire of the bright orange markers on the Zodiac.

TR has one. I've tried multiple time to score one on the 'bay unsuccessfully.

The Tag Heuer Super Professional is one of the coolest vintage dive watches out there. It is far from small and it looks absolutely stellar on the wrist. It is a monocoque one piece case offering 1000 Meter durability with no HEV. The lume is off the charts - something you rarely hear. Much like the Sinn U1, the bead blast finish almost glows in the light. The bracelet is stellar and quite comfortable.

I have heard the complaint that some feel the dial is too small. Personally, this is not the case at all to my eye.

fwiw: I searched for a fine example, low and high, for almost a year. Finding the "deal" and being in the chase is what gets me going. I don't like to pay too much for shit. I don't like my shit half ass. One thing you want to make certain of, imho, is that you find an example that has all the bezel lume pods in tact. It is common to see watches offered missing a pod. Keep an eye out for it. At the time I bought mine the market price was about $950 - $1000. I paid $1100 for mine without blinking an eye as I was lucky enough to grab it from my buddy, Vic Boyd... who keeps his stuff pristine and is a legendary dive watch man.

It is my understanding that this was one of the last watches designed by Heuer prior to Heuer being sold Techniques d'Avant Garde group holdings.

My wrist size is 7 3/4". I had to source two new links, which are still available if necessary through an AD.

Plus, buying it from Vic garnered me entrance into the legendary....

Superb info here that will likely put you over the edge...from my buddy Clayton Rawn:

Great watch, if I recall a guy on watchrecon has two of them for sale, one is mint and the other one is around 85% maybe. Also think they were around 1200 bones.

If I had the bank I would pimp one.

Agree with TR, one of the coolest divers fro the money.. it really has wrist presence.

There are several different iterations...

A rough guide.. (not including the Heuer variant)

Earlier has the tiny lume dots on the inner bezel & a polished rehaut ring

Then a bit later.. no inner lume dots (now black) and a matt black rehaut ring.

Polished rehaut ring model..

Black rehaut ring model.. case slightly squarer too - but hard to tell!

^ Thanks for that info, Stewart. :salute:

I have never heard the differences regarding the rehaut and the lume dots on the inner bezel. I had pinged mine as being an earlier version based on the case numbers on the back. Glad to know I was in range.

When sold new they came in a very cool leather type "wallet", a lot like the Zodiac SSW. They came with both bracelet and porthole rubber strap and a decompression chart. I wish I had that bit of kit.

I do believe that the folks who designed the Super Pro played a major role in the design of the SSW.

Also.. the safety clasp is straight on the earlier ones, and chevron shaped on the later ones.
The leather dive kit (I've got one  ) was optional.
Without it, it came in a box that was ridged.

Also, don't forget there was a PVD version too..

Thanks for the info, guys. I'd already read everything you've written about them on your site, Stewart, so had an idea about the different references.
Terry, the two on recon were already on my radar.

Only issue now is whether I follow the head or the heart.

My rational inner-WIS says to go for <42mm pieces with less thickness. And the irrational says...f@&k it. Get whatever takes your fancy.

Thing about the S-Pro is that it's just plain cool, with no 'baggage', completely unpretentious. My advice would be to pay a bit more for a really good example.
I've been lucky enough to have owned some really slick Heuers, but you know what.. the S-Pro is a definite keeper, it could happily be my 1 and only watch.

I love them both. However, I usually wear the TAG Super Pro in my deep dives.

Man, I love the S-Pro. I came this close to buy a NOS exemplar found locally, but unfortunatelly the deal didn't fly. :crybaby:

The S-Pro shares the same case (minus some small differences, like the little ponsoir at the bottom of the case, and also the bezel of course) with the Aquastar Benthos II...Image
(pic by Vegaban)

Also, the Zodiac is very cool, with its funky bezel...it shares the exact same case (minus the bezel, obviously) from the Scubapro 500:

Big fan of these classics. That gold bezel is a unicorn and I'd love to see it in person

Yeah, the gold bezel is ummm...different. Gotta wonder what they were thinking with that one.
