Sumo

Well I figured I'd give Seiko a shot, and I am definitely pleasantly surprised. I picked up a Sumo from Daniel over at TZ, and the Sumo impressed me more in person than in photos. Seems to me like its a lot of watch for the $$, and is super comfortable. I thought I'd put it on Nato, but I'm liking it with the bracelet so much I haven't even tried. Solid watch for the $$ imho. Now comes the inevitable quest for the MM300, that seems like the usual progression now lol. If only the sumo and the MM300 didn't sport a 20mm lug, seems like it should have a 22mm. Either way still a new favorite for me!

I'm wearing my orange one right now. If you are looking for a rubber strap the MM300 strap is an excellent option. Great watches even if they are a bit on the large side.

The Sumo isn't my thing so much, prefer the Shogun, but the MM300 is one of my all time favourites

Nice. Funny the SKX line has 22mm lugs and I think that would be better for the Sumo as well. I prefer 20mm and think it works perfectly with the MM300.

I started with skx, then vintage, then tuna, then mm300, then a sumo. Skipped the monster.

The mm300 is a totally different watch than the sumo. It's more polished and the dial and hands are more elegant. But like you said- for under $500 the sumo is one of the best you can get for the money. I love the movement.

And the mm300 rubber that mr torrid suggested is anything but comfortable. I've never worn it on a sumo but it was near painful on the mm300. Very stiff and hard.
Try an isofrane and maybe NATO/Zulu,

Sumo's are great watches ... one of the best bang for the buck divers out there.

For bracelet / strap options ... bonetto cinturini makes a great version of the classic Seiko wave strap. Soft, comfortable and cheap. Also check out yobobies bracelets. He makes a 22mm bracelet that comes with 20mm end pieces that fit the Seiko.

Yeah, I can tell from pics that the MM300 is a bit more up-classed, just by the bezel. As far as the strap, I have about 15 20mm nato straps from the two Rescos I have, so nato it'll be! But I really like the bracelet for now.. There are a few watches that I know I will own at one point or another.. A ceramic Submariner, explorer ii and an MM300. Theres a few more, but those are definite.

I think the 20mm lugs are perfect. The design is a modern Japanese take on classic Seiko divers and the design is all about the big fat lugs with the contrasting polished/brushed surfaces. The thin/narrow bracelet purposely helps emphasize those lugs. The design is almost intentionally cartoonish, especially with the bezel font and I love it. May get another some day.

My path was SKX007 > BASM > Spork > Tuna > MM300 > Tuna. Still have the Tuna and BASM.

Sumo's are fantastic watches especially for the $$.

If you want a bigger bracelet, you can also try them on a yobokies bracelet (anvil, hammer, oyster or BOR) .... they're 22mm but with 20mm end pieces.

Very nice. I love these, but I went for the Shogun first and then the MM300. I just can't justify buying one of these but I think it looks great. I love the 20mm bracelet on it as I do on the MM300. The 22mm suits the Shogun though.

I love the Sumo but continue to become iffy about it. Not sure why. Even wearing it right now. The lug width definitely isn't the concern.

Of course I have flipperitis and sold the Sumo, I miss it. Im going to the SBBN015 for now, maybe the mm300 after that. I also saw the Orient S300, seems like a mix between the mm300 and the dssd on a lower quality scale. I like the look of it.

Only the early ones are non hacking. The newer OS models hack. I believe the newer hacking movement is called the 40N50.
