What? There's no kool-aid being drunk here, and I'm not concerned with whether or not the rights were secured by Kobold. All I'm saying is that Kobold used these cases first; they're recognized as Kobold designs and feature traditional Kobold design cues; and that anyone using them after the fact is a) lazy, b) a poor excuse for a watch "company", and c) is coming to the party a day late and a dollar short.
Fact: Kobold is the first to use the cases in question here.
Fact: These cases didn't turn up with other watch "company's" dials on 'em until Fricker's relationship with Kobold went pear-shaped and Kobold moved production to the US (interesting note: if Fricker owns the case designs, then how is Kobold still producing them on their own?).
Fact: This has happened before with Eddie Platt's now classic Dreadnought, where the case (which was designed with input from both parties) wound up being used by other companies without Eddie's knowledge.
Fact: Neither case in question is a so-called "contract" case; i.e. Fricker didn't design them on spec to offer to any and all who came a-callin'. They were developed for Kobold, and I'll eat my hat if anyone can PROVE otherwise (and for the last freakin' time, I'm not concerned with legal ownership crap here, just whether or not these cases were designed for the hell of it, or whether they were designed for Kobold).
And Chris, since you're so concerned about drink orders, tell you what -- I won't buy a JE Atlantis, Alphatime Sawfish, or Kenzo Nautilus either. Nor will I shell out money for any of the clone divers (Helson, Deep Blue, Steinhart/Debaufre). Same goes for the Longio crew. Is that better?
So no, you don't see where I'm going with this. But hey, if a Dievas or Urhmechanik (or any of the other rip-offs I mentioned above) appeals to you, go for it: As I always say, buy what you like and wear what you buy. Me, I'll stick with originality.
Regards,
Adam
