Sea Dweller Questions

Post by Jamie » Fri Apr 26, 2013 10:46 pm

Well guys I havent bought a lot in a while as nothing really catches ye old eye much any more. I figure this is only temporary but it has also allowed me a certain amount of time with no new watches to appreciate those that I have and why I like them.

So it's time for something new and it's down to 2 brands. This is not a this or that but a question to current or past Sea Dweller owners. I have tried it on many times and always felt it too small however the Chopard Pro One has taught me that big is not always better and I have grown a huge appreciation for that watch since it has arrived. So I tried the black bay on it was the leather option but it was just so small on me that I could not really believe it would be a permedanent addition. So onto the Sea Dweller which is similar in specs but chunkier.

Please let me have your opinions in regards to how you found her when she was in your care.

Still one of my favorite modern Rolexes.

Really great combo of heft and presence and comfort, at least on my wrists.

Jamie, while I don't own one, I love the Seadweller (the few times I've been fortunate enough to play around with one). Like Matt said, a great combination of heft and comfort. I'm wondering, though, if the DSSD wouldn't be a better fit on you (having already noted the smallness of the Black Bay). Granted a step up in price but...

The 16600 is simply awesome. It will also be too small for you. Sometimes I'm glad I have twigs for wrists.

It's only small compared to the 44 ad 46 behemoths that are out there (not that there's anything wrong with those bigger watches). It's got a great feel on the wrist and in my opinion, it's right-sized for most people. I still own mine and at one time I owned the Deep Sea at the same time. I sold the DSSD and kept the SD. It's a classic watch and I highly recommend it. It won't feel small on your wrist.

Yes, 40 mm is just too small these days. Bigger watches obviously look way cooler and more natural, right?

Correction: The Sea-Dweller is a small diver.

Who's the model? Jean-Claude Van Damme? ;)

Dam smaller than the black bay that sucks. They didn't have a dweller in stock for comparison.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I really don't want to be flipper flippe faster than lightning any more so tryi g to make a concided decision.

There's gotta be somewhere in Sydney where you can try on a 40mm Rolex, so just do that and see what you think. Just remember that the SD has more presence than the Sub (the old one, not the ceramic) b/c it's thicker.

Yes David tried it on heaps over the years and will probably buy from a local 2nd hand dealer for this one if I get it. Just wanted some feed back. It's one thing to walk out with it another thing entirely to still like it in a month.

if you like thick'ish watches, the SD will wear well and it's really comfy.

but wrist/watch face-wise... it will look COMPARATIVELY smaller to most modern watches, but not in a bad way.

try it on at the dealer's, take a pic, post it, and we'll talk you through it.

I love the SD, but always find it too small. I think I had to buy extra links for it, too...

Love my SD. The thicker case back and crystal nicely off-sets the case diameter. It is a beautifully executed piece in all respects.

Agreeing with what most others have said here. If you are used to 44mm plus watches it will look small. Having said that it really isn't a small watch at 40mm and thicker than the same generation submariner with a heavier crystal.

I love mine

cant go wrong with a sea-dweller, it and the submariner 'transcend time and space', it is and always be a venerable go to watch comfortable in all situations

I suppose if a Panerai is your ideal size for a watch it would feel too small. The DSSD is too much for me, and the SD is just right.

I love my SD. It's definitely my "if I could only have one watch" watch. My wrist is 6.5", so it's a great size for me. It also isn't that thick, but it's definitely thicker than a Sub or a GMT. I wear it very comfortably with a dress shirt all the time.

I imagine you have larger wrists than I (because, I mean, who doesn't?), but I also think the trend toward larger watches has skewed some of this. There was a time when a 40 mm watch was considered large. That said, if you think a 40 mm watch looks too small on your wrist, I don't think the added thickness of the SD is going to counteract that. As someone suggested, you may want to look at the DSSD, but it's a step up in price.

Hey Jamie,

Not sure how big your wrists are but while the SD is "smaller' than some watches, it is certainly not miniscule. It's a great everyday watch. Here are some SD/DSSD comparison shots:

Gordo, for some reason I really want a DSSD right now.

DSSD is a wonderful watch but at this point in my life I would love to own a good ole SD, thicker than a Sub, no cyclops and when did 40mm become so small? If you've been wearing that Breitling Black Bitch as you call it the SD will seem small for a day and then it just works, go for a sweet SD Jamie!

If you can get over the size, it is like no other watch. Rolex really nailed this, and it's a shame there isn't a production SD any more. The DSSD is nice, but it's a totally different watch. Where else can you get a watch with a 1220M depth rating that looks this good?

Have you tried on the Sub C?

I absolutely loved my SD when I owned it. Never thought I'd get rid of it. But after trying on a Sub C I decided to trade the SD for one. In hindsight the SD is narrower and more top heavy than the Sub. The Sub C is perfect IMO.
