Red Wing Boots Question
Red Wing Boots Question
Gents,
As you know, I have run a bit amok lately with some boot purchases. All to the good, but I just got an email from the seller of the Red Wing Beckmans that I bought, saying that he did not actually have them in my desired size / colour.
So, here's my quandry: I am contemplating getting a pair of Iron Rangers, instead. I normally take a size 10 in boots, so am going down to a size 9.5, based on recommendations from the seller as well as my experience with size 9 versus size 10 try-ons at a local store (and several people who have told me that Red Wins tend to fit a bit big, so going down a half size is a good idea. And I am right in between a size 9.5 and a size 10, anyway, depending on the boot). But, I also normally need a bit wider boot (E or even EE, depending on the manufacturer).
Long-winded explanation above, but here's my question: can I get away with normal D width or do I need a E / EE in the Iron Ranger line?
Thanks, gents.
James

IME, the IR's are a smidge on the narrow side. I don't have particular wide or narrow feet either way though, so I just went with the D-widths and they fit fine. But even visually, they seem narrower.

James, I think moishlashen is going to tell you the IRs run slightly narrow as compared to the Beckman's...

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
And that's what I am afraid off. The Beckmans I tried on / ordered were slightly narrow at the D width, but I was confident that, with a bit of working in and oil, they would be perfect. I just get the sense that the IRs, like Matt said, look a bit narrower ... and I really dislike narrow footwear; it is one of my piss-offs that has made me get rid of many a pair of shoes / boots.justsellbrgs wrote:James, I think moishlashen is going to tell you the IRs run slightly narrow as compared to the Beckman's...
The Chipps I got are 9 1/2EE and I think will be perfect.

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
I'd get the EE James. Amber Harness and Hawthornes come in EE width I believe-I'll check. Black and Copper rough and tough don't. They're narrow. I have a borderline wide foot and I can wear them but break in was a painfull bastard-something I'm sure you're familiar with.

Rangers are definitely narrower than Beckmans.

Merde, merde, merde. You're undoubtedly right. And I am having a real challenge getting a pair of black Iron Rangers in 9.5E anywhere in Canada. It seems that none of the retailers that I normally use here in Canada for my boots fix can be bothered to get black Iron Rangers in size 9.5E / EE. And of course I get hammered bringing them across the border (socialist welfare state that Canada is) with taxes and such.moishlashen wrote:I'd get the EE James. Oh well, it is what it is. Guess I will bite the bullet and buy south of the border and take the pain.

LOL, thanks, Matt. I really like how people here at DWC step up to help each other out when it comes to the tough decisions regarding watches vs. boots.matt.wu wrote:James, when you sell your Dweller to buy more boots - dibs.

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Black and Copper Rough Tough only come in D widths. Hawthorne and Amber Harness are available iin EE Widths.

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
The IRs are definitely narrower, James. I have both Beckmans and IRs in the same 10D size. That said, I think they will finish breaking in and will work as long as I don't go with thick socks. Best of luck with however you get yours.
Cheers,

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Well, just did it; ordered the IRs in black, size 9.5EE. And got a really good deal, so all is good in the world.
Pics and review once I get it (same for the Chipps, expected tomorrow).
Thanks for all of the advice, gents. Looking forward to getting both pair ... and the Aldens.

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Cool. I wasn't trying to give you bad info-I actually called my local RW store (Herb) and he said the Iron Ranger is not made in EE widths in black

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Yep, I know. Just got the same call from my guy in Alberta. So, looks like I go with the IRs in Amber, 9.5EE.moishlashen wrote:Cool. I wasn't trying to give you bad info-I actually called my local RW store (Herb) and he said the Iron Ranger is not made in EE widths in black
It means the Chipps in dark chocolate brown and the IRs in amber. That's a good enough difference for me.
All good and thanks for the help, moish. It is what it is.

And here are the pair that I ordered (glam shot). Shipping out tomorrow, so I should see them within the next few days (probably early next week).
Very cool. Will post pics once I get these and the Chipps.

Thanks, Gents. I have been literally thinking about this purchase for years but never seemed to get around to it, always finding excuses. Happy to say that I have no more excuses, although I still find it a bit surreal to have spent almost $300 on a pair of boots (let alone two other pair, although the Chipps are a bit cheaper and the Aldens are ... well, the Aldens).

Great looking boots.

only 1/2 size down? I think RW runs small; my running shoes are generally 13, Danners 12, RW 11.

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Well, I'll let you know. I am kind of in no-man's land between 9.5 and 10. But the pair of RW size 9 moc toes were just a tiny bit too small, so I figure a size 9.5 should do the trick. I'll let you all know.lilhoody wrote:only 1/2 size down? I think RW runs small; my running shoes are generally 13, Danners 12, RW 11.

James.... I'm wearin' 1000 miles today and they fit me better than the Beckman's....... width and toe box has more room for me...

Re: Red Wing Boots Question
Funnily enough, I am going to go and try on 1000 milers today at lunch. I really want a pair of black as well as a pair of brown boots, so I have decided that I will be sending one of either the Chipps or the IRs back (depending on fit) and getting a pair of black 1000 milers (assuming the fit works).justsellbrgs wrote:James....
