Certified Instructor - WIS

Post by ArielJavier » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:11 am

As part of a recent promotion at work, I was sent to "Instructor" school so that I may carry the certification to teach others a particular set of skills (i.e. firearms, taser, emergency driving, ect...).

The class consisted of me having to create two lesson plans from the ground up, create a PowerPoint presentation, a test and then be able administer said test. The first topic was chosen for us, which ended up being "gun safety". The second, which needed to be a 25-35 minute presentation was up to me.

My obvious choice was The History of the Wristwatch. Watch love to the rescue. It was actually a great learning experience for me as I learned many things not known to me prior to me having to create this lesson plan. How many knew a descendent of the wrist watch is something women primarily wore called wristlets? Hmmm... How many knew that the wristwatch helped the British win the Anglo-Boer war by helping the military synchronize attacks? That Rolex was originally Wilsdorf & Davis Ltd?

I passed out "watch" magazines as visual aids and presented a 35 minute PowerPoint presentation on the subject. I was told I rocked it!!!

Regardless, it was great time travel for me and it allows me to know the history of my beloved hobby. Did it all, wearing my recently acquired Marathon JSAR, which to me was a bit ironic, since it represents modern day quartz technology.

I'm now a certified instructor, on police matter that is. I'll leave the watch instruction to professional Horologist.

Cool. BTW the Sinn rubber looks tops on the JSAR bud.

Sure. Just let me know and I'll provide it. Not sure how to submit it but if someone can show me, I'll do it.

Well played.

We had to do the same thing (develop a short non-work related course w/lesson plan) to become certified as a Fire Service Instructor.

I did hydraulic brake systems. Watches would have been more fun, and the props easily to carry. ;)

Very cool. I did a presentation on the Seiko spring drive movement in an innovation module I had in business school. It's fun to share the 'wis' gospel.

Captive audience. When else can we get someone to listen our dribble that long?! Nicely done.

Congratulations on the promotion and on qualifying. When I was doing my post-grad teacher-training year we had to do the same thing and have it filmed. Our "lessons" were for only 15 mins and since I was doing a lot of climbing at the time, I did it on knots. The best (most amusing) however, was a 15 minute lesson on how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness. Interesting what you said about the Boer war: whilst studying war poetry at uni' our lecturer said that the wristwatch evolved mainly due to the needs of the military, so this may have been what he had in mind.

Steve

I'm sure that's what he meant. The British were highly outnumbered, yet they were able to triumph. This was due to the advent of the wristwatch that allowed them to attack in unison. It was those servicemen returning home that caused wristwatches to transition from a woman's wristlet to a mens watch.

Early on, men would "rather wear a skirt then wear a wristlet".

Now does that mean you don't need the watch no more?

Reminds me of a story my father-in-law told me about his (to be father-in-law). He went round to pick up my mother-in-law when they were dating and saw a fountain of high-pressure water spurting out of the ground. His future FiL was standing watching it, soaking wet, leaning on a spade drinking a cup of tea. When my FiL asked what he was doing, he said he was having a break. He'd been digging and fractured a pipe and the pair of them spent the next few hours fixing it.

My sincerest congratulations on obtaining your instructor certification.

Take that charge and charter seriously: your ability to train someone properly will save their life or that of another. It is incumbent upon you to give of yourself in order that others are trained, able and ready. Always remember to model excellence: every word you speak, every action you take and every attitude you portray is being absorbed by your charges and it will one day be a single word, action or attitude that you modeled that will help them survive.

God bless you for what you do.
