Brando's 1675 sold today at auction. Stupid $

Post by 93 Turbo » Sat Nov 18, 2023 5:27 pm

This is just stupid IMO.

Saw a comment on Insty saying "a piece of history". BS a piece of movie history FFS.

Apocalypse Now also makes history at Christie's auction “Passion for Time - An Important Private Collection of Watches and Timepieces”! The Rolex GMT Master 1675 that the unidentified American actor Marlon Brando wore during filming has just sold today for the exorbitant amount of $5,100,000.00. A notable feature is the complete removal of the bezel and the engraving of the caseback with the actor's name making it unique and inimitable.

Doing some googling I see it sold three years ago for $2M.
Not bad doing 150%+ in three years.

For as insane as it is, this is one of the things I would do if I had crazy money (think Saudi royalty), ahead of yachts and other crazy expensive stuff.

Brando is a legend, the movie is legendary, and the watch is iconic. You’d own a 1 of 1.

I agree with Jules…

I don’t care if Brando owned it, or that it was in a movie - It’s a tool watch.

I see no reason why it has a value of $5m except the new owner has the financial ability to wipe his ass with $1m notes without flinching. And, in spite of dropping that money the owner will never be able to relive or experience any part of Brando or the movie because they own it.

You could overspend and build that watch for 1% of that cost.

But, it ain’t my money so I’ll just let myself out now.

Wasn’t this sale like two weeks ago? Thought I read an article about it.

value is based on what someone is willing to pay. The buyer is not buying "a tool watch". It's a piece of art/history that has tremendous value. It would be like saying a Mickey Mantle rookie card is just a piece of cardboard......

There are people in this world that are just rich and money is nothing and 5 million just pocket change. It’s like one of us buying what we can afford but these guys can afford more so not so crazy. If any of us made more money we all would move our hobby up a notch and buy stuff like this watch. It is a piece of movie history. It was maybe his last movie.

On the flip side, imagine explaining to the Mrs/trouble & strife... even at this level, I say guys have to down play the $. "Look honey, it's old, and is missing parts, and look the dude has scratched his name on the back, It was a bargain..."
