suggestions: a watch for an 11 yr old boy

Post by gwells » Tue Nov 14, 2023 9:13 am

my office is doing a salvation army angel tree gift drive for less fortunate kids. and, of course, I picked the kid who asked for a watch. I don't know much about him, other than name, age, and a few clothing sizes. and that he likes ninja turtles (but i don't want to do that for a watch).

so not going to go *too* crazy on price here, but something that's nice enough to get him started.

Costco? Amazon? If he’s 11 he could be hoping for a G-Shock / Smart type watch. I’d think a quartz mid-size 36mm diver would be cool.

My son at around that age had a Freestyle "Shark Leash" digital watch.

They are bright colored "surfer" style digital watches.

Oh cool Greg, that's going to be fun finding something, and honestly I think that the
guys already found some awesome ones. ;) :) Seriously, all the watches would be
great for him I think. And just to add to the list Swatch, who also own Flikflak.
Oh and by the way, I put the last one which is a Swatch on the bottom in because
it just looked really cool, and had an 80's vibe.

In any case, thanks so much just for asking us to help, and good luck in the search !!!

The Kids' Timex Camper watch used to be available from J. Crew. Not sure if they’re still available but that’d be a great starter watch.

Also maybe check eBay and Amazon and you might find a small Club G / Mini G, which was perfect for my son when he was that age. The JDM Mini G gets pricey, though.

I had something like this when I was a teen but Casio I think. I think I still have it and it still runs.

I think that would be a good call. For an 11 year old, I’d definitely go solar or quartz.
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

I'm really bummed the camper isn't available any more. There's a page on j crew, but it shows unavailable. That would have been perfect.

It's not available through jcrew, but the camper is on Amazon. 42 bucks. Looks pretty rad, actually.

unfortunately, that one is 40mm, which might be a little big for an 11 yr old.

there's a 38mm one that's $68. that's on my short list for now.

I have one of these never worn. I’d send it with only asking for shipping costs, but it would probably cost as much for me to ship it for what you could buy it off Amazon for.

I think that’s an awesome pick. Those are rugged as heck, easy to read (night or day), and good looking.

I think the kid's gonna like the word "Expedition" on the dial, as well. ...

He sure lucked out, that you picked his card (?).

BTW, maybe throw in an extry battery for him.

I am giving my 10 year old nephew a Casio Royale for
Christmas. I think kids would dig the little world map.

I think something tech forward would be good, like a Garmin or similar, not an Apple Watch.
