Movie suggestions!!
Re: Movie suggestions!!
I thought the Irishman was just OK. Too long, slow-paced, and I couldn't help feel that the whole was a bit less than its parts. I don't see myself ever watching it again. Not exactly in the realm of The Godfather, Goodfellas, etc (or even Heat).
Re: Movie suggestions!!
I liked the Irishman. But there’s some serious question about Sheeran’s claims.

Re: Movie suggestions!!
I read the book ("I Heard You Paint Houses") years ago and always thought it would make a helluva movie. I think this guy's story is as believable as . . . well, Jimmy Hoffa being buried under the goalposts at the Meadowlands. The naysayers and conspiracy freaks I think are just concerned that maybe the mystery is solved and their gravy train is drying up. It's like the "Oswald acted alone" theory - if it's true, it invalidates 50 years of tin foil hat opportunists and conspiracy conjecture addicts. Who made (make) a lot of dough doing it. So of course that crowd is gonna shoot down the easiest explanation. (Me? Kennedy was a mob hit - no question).
Thing is, you can't have it both ways. You can't say, on one hand, that mob hits are distinguished by the fact that they are purposefully done so that nobody knows who did them except for the shooters . . .
And then dismiss Sheeran for the hit on the basis of "jeezus, he never could have done it!". Which means maybe he did. Who knows.
Whenever you make a mob movie - good, bad or so-so - it's never going to be 100% accurate. "Donnie Brasco" came pretty close. "The Irishman" fits in well with "Goodfellas" and "Casino": fictionalized versions of mafia events that really happened based on real people . . . just maybe not exactly as portrayed.

Exactly sums up my opinion as welldukerules wrote:I thought the Irishman was just OK. Too long, slow-paced, and I couldn't help feel that the whole was a bit less than its parts. I don't see myself ever watching it again. Not exactly in the realm of The Godfather, Goodfellas, etc (or even Heat).

Re: Movie suggestions!!
Watched Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker yesterday. I liked the Mandalorian series better.
Episode 9 is a good action movie and entertaining, however there’s nothing new and no character development. It’s pretty much Jedi Rey and her wisecracking cast of friends. They could have named it “Rey and her buddies go fight the same bad guys on familiar looking movie sets, again”. Disney has turned Star Wars into a Disney princess movie.

Grumpy feels like saying more so I’ll keep going.
The most memorable part of Episode 9 was the Wonder Woman 1984 trailer. Really enjoyed watching Gal Gadot pound bad guys to a heavy Blue Monday backbeat.

I don’t know. I saw Episode IX today, and I loved it. Fitting end to the series which originated with the movie I first saw in the theater, Episode IV, over 40 years ago. I am pretty sure many people would have panned Empire had it been released today.
Re: Movie suggestions!!
Not disagreeing it is a good movie, and I’m sure I’ll watch it again on Disney+. It’s just gone the way of Friday the 13th. I was hoping for more new material. I guess I did get one plot advancement but I won’t go into spoiler turf.
Re: Movie suggestions!!
E9 was fine. Certainly not the best of them, tho. It was great for me on a personal level because I got to watch it in the theater with my son, who's about the same age I was when E4 come out in '77. It was a nice way to close the circle.
I will say that towards the end it felt a bit like pandering to the fanbase, but that one surprise cameo had me shouting at the screen lol

Going to see it with your child who is the same age as you were for your first episode. That’s sweet!!four20 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 1:53 pmE9 was fine. Certainly not the best of them, tho. Not really a movie, but has anyone watched "The Witcher" on Netflix? I don't want to say too much, but it's slyly good TV.

I'm about half way through and I like it a lot. It's hard to explain what it actually is. I'm not sure I've ever watched a show like it before. I think it might be better than GOT - definitely better than the later seasons.

I didn't get through much of the first episode; sounds like I should give it another shot.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 6:17 pmNot really a movie, but has anyone watched "The Witcher" on Netflix? I don't want to say too much, but it's slyly good TV.

Re: Movie suggestions!!
I won’t ruin it for you, but I will say that the early episodes are based on short stories, which help to explain the background of all the characters. They also aren’t in temporal order. It starts coming together in episodes 4 and 5 and gets a lot more linear.mattcantwin wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2019 5:51 amI didn't get through much of the first episode; sounds like I should give it another shot.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon Dec 23, 2019 6:17 pmNot really a movie, but has anyone watched "The Witcher" on Netflix? Re: Movie suggestions!!
mostly watched 6 Underground the other night. it was an homage to all things gratuitous. i don't need to see increasingly creative and graphic depictions of people dying in bullet time for minutes on end. it seems like the movie Ryan Reynolds wanted to make with Deadpool but Fox pumped the brakes vigorously with both feet

I thought it was a fun watch. Get your point, but I enjoyed it. Bay was wide open with this one.four20 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2019 9:55 ammostly watched 6 Underground the other night. it was an homage to all things gratuitous. i don't need to see increasingly creative and graphic depictions of people dying in bullet time for minutes on end. it seems like the movie Ryan Reynolds wanted to make with Deadpool but Fox pumped the brakes vigorously with both feet

Just watched Icarus on Netflix. Documentary about the Russian PED scandal. Very good and surprisingly intense.

Just got back after watching 1917. Technically very good, but didn't much like it and left disappointed; thought Journey's End was much better in every way. Also, I don't get the whole thing of having big-name actors in small roles

Re: Movie suggestions!!
October Faction on Netflix is a decent secret society hunts the monster series, if a little teen-dramatic. No heavy thinking needed. Just 10-second skip through the crap parts and veg as needed.
Dracula series is good (Netflix). No teen crap.
Witcher on Netflix started slow but got so much better.
Tore through Expanse season 4 on Prime. Awesome. Need more. Going to hunt down the books.
