Is Tag Starting Not To Suck?

Post by dshap » Sat Jan 15, 2011 5:08 pm

First they come out with the 1887 Carrera chrono with an inhouse (or sorta inhouse) movement, and today I saw this Mikrograph on Hondinkee. It's mechanical and accurate to 1/100th of a second!

I'm pretty sour on Tag right now (except for the Monaco and a couple other reissues), but it seems like they're coming out with some legit new stuff.

That one at the top is pretty darn cool. What movement? Is the that Seiko base (that was Tag right?)?

Depending on the cost, pretty nice effort.

I'm assuming the Mikrograph is in-house

Seiko based movement which Tag is calling "in-house"...

Regardless that Cal 1887 is a good looking watch....It went back
for a re-design coming out in Feb or March of this year (no Tach)..

I believe the retail is going to be close to if not $4K....

Last year Tag announced a "new" in-house movement. It turned out, that much of the movement was actually a Seiko design that Tag had licensed. Once it leaked out, that a Seiko design was the basis for the new movement, Tag ad to admit it publicly and took some serious egg to the face.

Not sure how much modification Tag did to the Seiko design, but it was quite the kerfuffle for a bit last year.

Reading an article the other day in a magazine, Tag have been heavily and quietly investing in tooling and machines.
The Seiko movement they licensed, they claim to use only the main plate as this was designed for mass production and it suited them. Their words.
The rest is being made inhouse i believe the article said.

Seems the company is going from strength to strength and acquiring other companies over the last 10 years, to restructure and revive the brand. The V4 for example.
The have purchased ( some time back) a case maker in Switzerland as well.

I never liked Tag, never felt it was something i would wear.

Until the V4 that is! I would wear that proudly and since i first saw that, i have seen some other Tag watches that actually seemed ok to me for the first time.
It was not until the other week when i picked up a magazine at the airport and read the article i referred to earlier that i even realized the brand has been changing.

The article was about the CEO, and his 10 years in charge. The way he sees the future, the past, etc.
Seems like they have very big plans and a clear vision.

Dont know why they dropped Tiger though, not like he was caught with his face in a kilo of coke or the like. Maybe it was they now have something like a 20% increase is women's watch sales, thats all i can think of.

No surprise here, but I still like old Heuer designs. Tag is looking better, from a design perspective. I have a secret desire to own an F1 ani- digi...

They're making most of the parts in-house but making and DESIGNING are two VERY different things. They arrogantly announced and kept announcing that they had DESIGNED the new movement "from the ground up" which was total BS - period. It's a Seiko movement with a VERY few modifications. When they had to admit it was a Seiko in the beginning and were trying to emphasize all the differences one of them they included in the #s was changing the writing on the rotor from Seiko to TAG

The only really nice new models they have IMHO are reissues or reworks of old Heuer designs :salute:

I like the new models but when IWC takes a base ETA movement and modifies it to their specs, it's called a highly modified 7750 not in-house...

just sayin...

Here's what Tag should do if they want to be taken seriously by WIS's.

Rebrand the company to just "HEUER".

In the end it sounds like they are headed in the right direction-which is good for us from a consumer standpoint. Sounds pretty solid that they are acquirring assets to design and manufacture their own watch-cepn maybe the movement. I'm not all that hung up on "In-House" movements. Yeah sweet to say and originality is always a positive thing but its not like ETA/Seiko movements are slouches. They are all pretty GD good.

Dont IWC just call it "cal xxxxxx' ?

I seem to recall seeing that on many of their models. Then if i am right, and my connection not good now, so not going to look it up, but if that is the case then they are kind of implying something that Joe public would not pick up on. Not lying either, but it is still misleading to me.

Mikrograph is based on a Zenith El Primero movement I think. Both are LVMH companies...

If Tag Heuer would just go back to some of their older design elements, they would be a lot more successful. I know this was per German Bund specs, but still one of the best chrono designs ever, IMO. This is my grail chrono.

I like some of Tag's simplier dressy models. I think they are a little over priced, but I find the designs appealing even more so in person.

These were pilot issued watches for the German Bundeswehr from the late 1960's-1970's. They were manufactured by Heuer and Sinn held the contract for maintenance. Sinn then took some extra parts left over after the contract expired, made some Sinn dials of the same style and sold those to civilians. This link and others on that page will tell you all about it.

http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/_Chronog ... undeswehr/

They usually go for around $2000-$2500 when you can find them. They're pretty rare since they have both the military and chrono collectors after them.

And all you Kobold fans, check this out. Only 20 made!
