Bought me a new ride

Post by SonnyD » Tue Oct 05, 2010 4:01 am

Well, I started feeling even more vulnerable with my upcomming birthday, so I did a "childish" thing and bought
myself a new bike. I feel I deserved it since I havn't bought a new one since 1987. I went out to the dealer
last Sunday thinking they'd be slower then usual, and I really couldn't do much on Sunday...................Wrong.
Actually wanted to look at a used model. Started looking at the new ones and decided too much money for me.
Then I looked at the used ones. Started figuring the new one was only going to be about 3500 more then the
used one and had a 24 month unlimited mileage warrnty. Of course the new one wouldn't have all the accessories
that the used one had. Anyway, I ended up saying SCREW IT, I'm getting a new one. I actually rode one they
had setting on the showroom floor. I've got 350 miles on it so far, trying to get to 1000 for my first service before
winter sets in. I hate break in's........It's taking longer to put miles on having to watch speeds, and varying speeds
so It's been a lot of back roads things like that, anyway here she is. all 96 Cubic inches of her.........2011 Dyna Super Glide Custom!!!!!

OH YEAH Brother

A few things...

Size Does Matter! There's no replacement for displacement! ;)

Break-in? Hell, ride it like ya stole it.

Dyna's rule! It's the best handling big HD chassis there is, period!

So True!!!!.....btw, those are the same pipes I'm going to buy. I had the V&H slip ons installed before I rode
the bike home, as I couldn't stand the litte "putt putt putt" of the stockers. As soon as she's broke in I'm doing
those pipes, and the V&H "naked" intake and the Fuel pak,
Great looking bike you have also my Friend.

Those V&H Shortshots Staggered are fantastic. Great look. Great sound. Hey, like it or don't - Loud Pipes Save Lives.

When you order the pipes, make sure they check the model numbers against the actual product. I bought mine as part of my "Harley Tax" and in the Drag Specialties Catalog they had a photo of the Shortshots Staggered but under the photo it had the model numbers for the Sideshots...a very different pipe. So after I dropped my bike at the shop to have the stage II air kit, the V&H Fuelpak and the pipes installed...what pipes do you think I ended up with???

You guessed it...Sideshots.
Image
They were great sounding pipes, even louder than the Shortshorts & more expensive. They wanted me to keep them, and they'd eat the difference; but, the Shortshots were what I wanted, what I ordered and I think they look better on the bike. They mimic the "V" of the jugs. They follow the line of the frame. They cover the rear brake linkage. They just look like they should be on that bike.
Image

So they ordered the correct pipes, I rode for a week with Sideshots, and then they did the swap. Those week-old pipes are still hanging in the dealership parts department. Seems nobody else wants'em, but they should discount those babies a little and they'd be gone. Out the door.

Looking back, the Bigshots Staggered might have looked a touch better to balance the length of the bike, but these babies work just fine.

Since the pic above, I have swapped out all the linkages, foot & hand controls, levers and pegs for the HD Black Diamond ones. I also removed the bar&shield and the "dagger" emblem from the fuel tank. With the tank all clean, I put on the HD Dark Custom derby and timing covers. I just always loved the HD red, white & blue #1 emblem but it didn't go with the flat black finish, however the Dark Custom skull #1 fits real nice.

I still need a proper seat (Harley seats are designed to keep chiropractors in business)...probably go with a Corbin Classic Solo & Pillion ( http://www.corbin.com/harley/dyna/hdfxdfb8s.shtml ). Maybe swapping out the rear shocks. I am looking into swapping some 2011 Fat Bob parts, if they'll fit. Maybe the black rear fender support. Maybe the new Screaming Eagle Sportster-style air cleaner which fits the big twin...always liked that oblong sportster air cleaner. Küryakyn used to make a nice simple round air cleaner called the "High Five" I think, it was available in flat black, looked sweet. V&H used it in their ad photos for the Shortshots, but nobody could ever find it for me...all they could find was the chrome version, now neither are available. They've been replaced with the High Five Mach 2. So I am scrounging around trying to find a shop that has the High Five in Wrinkle Black for my bike...so far, no luck.

Wow, your really doing some cool mods. I see Great minds think alike, I'm also going to be doing the "dark custom' Derby
cover. I think I'm probably going to go with the Bigshots Staggered, but I also like the Sideshots alot. I'm going to do the
SE Heavy Breather after 1000 mile service along with the Fuel pak. I'd do it at the 1000 mile service but the map for the
2011 models isn't out yet. It's supposed to be out by the end of the month. I wouldn't have thought the 2010 and 2011
would have been different but they are. The motors are the same, but the computer settings are different. They told me
they figured they'd be the same too, and they installed the Fuel pak for the 10 model on the 11 model Dyna, and they
said it wouldn't run past 70mph. They tried it on a new Road King too, and said it ran so bad they couldn't get it out
of the parking lot.
The new V&H Intakes look pretty cool also. I was going to go with one of them, but they told me that the Heavy Breather
was the best performing intake out there.
I'm not sure what all I'll do this winter. I want to do like a 4" riser and some Drag bars, but I don't want to have to change
any cables at this time, so I hope it will work. I've almost worn out the 850 page Harley "toy book"
Oh yeah, I just got a LePera "bare bones" solo seat, that I havn't installed yet. I liked the one I had on the Sporty, hopefully
I'll like this one too. Probably do the Forward controls over winter.
Boy, it's never ending is it?..................nor would I want it to be, LOLOLOL.

The 4" risers and drag bars sounds like a sweet mod. It will look great on that Super Glide! I've always been partial to that setup. I always liked Billy's bike over Wyatt's (Capt America). I think forward controls is the way to go on the Glide, especially when matched to the risers and drags. I was never much of a fan of forward controls until I finally got a Harley. I always thought they compromised control and handling, but I'll never go back (except if I ever pick up an old Sporty for my Cafe project).

LaPera, huh? Very nice!

Yeah, it never ends until you sell the bike...and then you start all over again with the next one.

I'll see if I can snap some pics with the dark custom derby so you can see it against the whole bike.

Here's a couple Q&D's of the Dark Custom Derby and timing cover on the bike.

The derby works well with the cleaned up tank. Keeps the bike from being "over-labeled."

I need to ditch that OEM air cleaner cover and obviously I need to wash it

You like that huh???

She's a 1979 bone stock FJ40 Rockcrusher except for a set of Old Man Emu leafs & shocks. I even had the engine rebuilt using genuine Toyota parts = $$$. OEM suspensions just ain't available anymore and mine had a set of mismatched rear leafs, so I decided the buck board ride and misaligned driveline had to go despite the loss of OEM goodness.

She was prettier, but it's been outside for a couple years now...gotta get it back in the garage.
