Is Seiko discontinuing the MM300?

Post by Dixan » Sun Apr 10, 2022 2:49 pm

Seems some are suggesting the Marinemasters are being discontinued? Gnomon is labeling all the MM300s they have as “final delivery.” Really hope not. The newest ones with the ceramic bezels have only been out since 2018, right? (SLA019 being the first.)

Only seiko knows. They don't give out any inside info.

I’m wearing the SLA047 as we speak - my 4th or 5th (?) MM - and I was about to post how much I love this watch and the incredible quality it provides for the $$ comparative to other watches in its price range…

Seiko may discontinue the line, but I think it would be a mistake for the company and a loss of an icon for the rest of us

I really hope they don’t, as well. The MM300 represents modern Seiko to me, at least at the higher-end, in terms of watchmaking, than just about any other model. Where else can you get a true one-piece, front-loading, case these days, especially for the money?

I guess it’s possible Gnomon is just divesting itself of the upper tier Seikos, and focusing on the mid-range more? Let’s hope that’s the case. It seems the SLA021/023, and the special and limited editions, seem to be doing well with enthusiasts….

If so they'll probably use the SLA055/057 case and add a price increase. A regular version without the ever bright steel. Maybe $500 bump in price?

I really like these, Paul.
If Seiko produced a regular production model of the SLA055/7 (non-gilt black dial, bezel, etc.), that would be a worthy successor to an MM300, especially in “Ever Bright” 904L. I don’t think we’ve seen Seiko include any 904L bracelets yet, though.

I like those too, but I don’t think they should abandon the 300 m divers. Maybe they will revamp them, and offer slightly thinner ones with conventional case backs? Having both 8L35 200 and 300 m lines would seem to make sense. FWIW, I think most MM300 fans are fine with the thick monocoque cases. It’s the main part of their character. Anyway, I’m waiting to hear back from Gnomon. It’ll be interesting to see what they say….

Just heard back from Gnomon. As far as they know, the SLA021 and SLA023 are discontinued. And there is no info on any replacements. That’s unfortunate. Hope they decide to continue the line….

That’s too bad. I’m sure whatever the replacements are, they will be much more expensive than the current MM300s. I think these are classics that will be very popular in years to come.

I'm glad I've been able to resist the temptation to sell mine for the past 14 years.

I just snagged an SLA023 today from a friend who has a seiko dealer as it was the last batch he's getting and there won't be any more. The rumor he's heard is the MM300 is going to be much more expensive for the next model. The Seiko LX line isn't selling well at all so he's unsure if it will be around much longer and perhaps the MarineMaster takes over that spot of more expensive models. He's thinking SLA039 type price. Will be a shame to see the MM300 become a 6,500 USD watch. Even at a huge discount, that's a lot of money for me.

That would be awesome. Problem is the price will be astronomical

I'm glad I just snagged one then from an interstate dealer. Quite a discount too.

While i don't mine the prospex symbol as it hasn't keep me from buying a few prospex divers, Seiko should have never gotten rid of Marine Master on the MM300.

I think Gnomen Watches has them and is running a 10% off sale right now, so about $2,200 net.

Like our esteemed colleague Myles, I have also resisted the temptation to sell my OG version SBDX001 that I’ve owned since new for the better part of a decade.

I really ought to send it to Japan for a service before parts become unavailable.

I would check with the SSC in Mahwah, NJ before sending it to Seiko Japan. They have a watchmaker that serviced my GS Diver and SBDX019.
