SBGE257

Post by dnslater » Wed Dec 22, 2021 12:18 pm

Picked this up today as I have always wanted to try a GMT and the green color mixed with the 40mm has attracted me since I first layed eyes on one in an AD last year. Thought I would share a few photos. This is one of the three smaller Spring Drive sport GMT's that GS released last year. At that time I picked up one of the thinner 9F Quartz GMT's.

Size
While the watch is a hair over 40mm wide, it is often knocked for the thickness which is over 14mm. I happened to have on my SPB143 when it arrived, and they wear almost identically and are almost identical in weight. The GMT has a nicely tapered bezel and sloping lugs so it wears well. Definitely feels a little chunky but not overly thick. Similar to how I remember the 16600 wearing. I will be selling it's SBGN003 brother as it almost feels too light and unsubstantial.... and I like small watches.

Color:
This one is really interesting as the ceramic bezel and sunburst dial a great shade of British Racing Green with a yellow GMT hand and text.... however indoors with relatively dim lighting the watch looks completely black.

Not too much more to say about it. The quick change hour hand is an excellent feature shared with my 9F quartz version. People say they prefer a rotating bezel, but this would be superfluous with the ease of changing the hour hand without touching the second/minute hand, unless you need a third timezone.

Picking up some green MN style straps... so will post updates as they should dress it down a bit.

Wears almost identically to the SPB143 and weighs a tad less.

I’m glad for Seiko; there are still “good values” to be had in the hobby.

Nice! I miss mine. FWIW, the green ceramic for the bezel and the green dial, are made of the exact same materials as the SLA019 Marinemaster’s bezel and dial. I was lucky to own both at the same time, and I was shocked to learn that. Makes sense since they likely formulated the green ceramic in 2018 for the LE SLA019, and then just used it on the 257. Wear it in good health. Love that watch. 🍻

Thanks, yes it makes sense that when doing the R&D to develop a ceramic color, they would use it on multiple watches. Love that green MM. Assume it changed color depending on light just like this one. Definitely tricky to photograph.

Great shot!

Yes, exactly. They had the exact same dial material and the same ceramic formula. I was truly shocked to see them side-by-side. Since the MM300s are made in the GS factory, with the Zaratsu on the sides, etc., it totally makes sense. I also had the blue version, the SBGE255. I miss both a lot. Interestingly, the green dial with gold hand is more legible, than the blue/blue. They’re fantastic watches. One of the very best releases by then in the last couple of years, imo. 👍🏻 🍻
