Surprise off the junkpile . . . 6105 - talk about a beater!

Post by MickeyKeys » Sat Feb 23, 2013 5:15 pm

Well, I was going to post my first impressions on the new BASM this weekend, but something else happened today . . .

My brother was in a thrift shop near work that he frequents. Knowing of my interest in watches, he keeps an eye out for anything that might be there.

So today he hands me this. The owner was going to toss it, and gave it to my brother instead . . .

After a little research, it appears that this 6105-8000 was made in June '68. And I really like the piece, but as you can see, it's in pretty rough shape. Several fairly vigorous shakes will induce it to run for 3-5 seconds - that's all. The lume is shot (having been tritium it would be dead by now anyway, but it looks like it's been wet) and the crystal . . . well, you've seen for yourself. Had the back off and the movement looks ok but what the heck do I know? It obviously isn't.

Took it to a local guy who is overhauling my inherited Mido, and asked if it could be saved. He didn't seem all that sure, and I inferred from what he said that it probably would be a hell of an expensive undertaking if he could.

So, in my inexperience, I decided to toss the question out to my fellow forumites and Sexually Desirable RockStar Moderators to see what you all might think.

Is it worth trying to save, and if so, any idea what I should expect to put into it? (or is it time to try and add watchmaking to my list of hobbies, LOL?)

Definitely worth saving. As long as the movement isn't totally shot and gets a thorough cleaning and lubing, a new crystal can be sourced. Get that dial relumed (Jack at IWW or Jay at MCWW - either of them can do the movement work and replace the parts, lume, etc). You will have to find a new (aftermarket) crystal but there's a few reputable sources out there. The case looks to be in good shape, which is a huge plus.

These are becoming rare in any shape. I think this was the second dive watch model after the 62-MAS. I haven't seem Gabe (Isthmus) around lately but he is a Seiko expert. I have been out of the Seiko game for a while but I think there are plenty of used or replacement parts available. I think I have some good research info I saved on PDF. If you want PM me your e-mail address and I will dig it up and send it to you. I think it is worth restoring.

Even if you spend $500 on service you're still ahead of the game.

Exactly! I don't even think a service and crystal on this one would run near that much. Do it!

You've all convinced me . . . I was leaning strongly in that direction anyway. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Plenty of parts out there from reliable sources, that watch is too cool not to have it running again, you've got nothing into it at this point and no way it cost 5 bills to repair, replace and enjoy! Keep it!

Movements are pretty easy to find for those and Jack can do a great job cleaning it up. In the end you'll have a great watch at an excellent price. Something like this...

This has the potential to be a great, and worthwhile, project. Love these 6105s.

Agreed. I'm doin' it. The head will be on its way to Jack via UPS tomorrow lunchtime.

I hope I can decide on a strap or bracelet (or multiples) by Labor Day. . .

Liking tropics, but one of those waffle straps would keep it more original looking. Also saw a jubilee style I kinda dig . . . good thing Jack quoted six months. The way I make decisions (I'm a terror in a restaurant) I may need all of it.

The wife's kinda amazed it only took me a day to pull the trigger on rehabbing the 6105. And I'm kinda amazed that she said she'd be disappointed if I didn't . . . gotta love that lady

Congrats on choosing to move forward. I like vintage tropic or leather on that model. There are aftermarket bracelet end links for the 6105 as I don't think Seiko made them. I think the lugs don't look right on a bracelet. But that i just my opinion. Search the net and you should find pictures. Harold (Yobokies) might have them or possibly Jake B (10watches) if you like the bracelet send it to Jack to check the end link fit and to do some filing / adjustments for a better fit.

Yea, I'm kinda leaning towards tropic myself. Maybe because my old Sheffield was on a tropic back in the mid 60's. I kinda miss that one.

They say "nostalgia is longing for the good old days that you wouldn't go back to if you could", but here's my chance, I guess.

After market crystals can still be had on fleabay if your watchmaker can't handle it take it to another there out there.Mine was in that shape I got the cyrstal on fleabay had my local guy service it and replace the crystal. And the hands and dial had a little moisture damage so I had Jack at IWW relume the dial and hands looks great now. There also a seller on fleabay with after market strap of the original ones there not bad since seiko don't make those straps any more.I will have to look for my before and after shots and post them.Good luck I know that watch can be made into some thing you would be proud to wear.

Sorry for bumping a 6-month-old thread, but I did promise "after" pictures.

I am however an awful photographer, these do not do Jack's work full justice.
