Seiko style waffle strap, NEW version

Post by toxicavenger » Thu Jun 18, 2015 2:31 pm

Just a heads up it seems some of the later model of the williamJ waffle straps have a issue with cracking. And this guy called UncleSeiko started producing another version at a cheaper price and seems to be a better quality. http://wristsushi.proboards.com/thread/ ... ues?page=2

Those WJean straps are as stiff as boards. I'm not surprised they crack.

For $7 plus free shipping why not give one a try?!

I have a couple of the old ones. Tried them on for half a day and went back to my old straps. Stiff as a board and feel like they are made out of plastic. Glad I got such a good deal on them off ebay so it wasn't that much of a loss. I was stunned at how guys on the boards gushed over them.

Interested to see how these new ones are.

The new ones from Uncle Seiko are half the price and suppose to be more flexible.

I think the deal is $29 plus free shipping within the U.S., add $7 for shipping outside the U.S.

Very tempting, but I need to measure to see if it is too long for me (just like all the other rubber Seiko straps).

Mike, they're 127 x 75mm, much shorter than modern Seiko straps. I've had both wjean and Uncle Seiko waffles and the US is actually stiffer than the wjean.

Maybe I have an older version of the wjean waffle but mine is pretty flexible. Nothing like an ISO and it has take a nice curve but it's also not too stiff.

If Jeff is right about the Uncle Seiko strap, I'll pass for the time being.

I just read Uncle Seiko's own comparison, and he says right up front his is a bit stiffer than the wjean, and I can confirm that, although I only wore the US for a couple minutes. He says they break in well, and that they can be softened up with hot (not boiling) water. I think the boiling water is what made wjean's crack. (IMO the whole wjean torn strap thing got blown out of proportion like the Helson leaky watch thing, one strap cracks and suddenly all wjean's suck.) He says the hole placement is slightly different too, and we know that a good fit isn't always automatic with one of these waffles, so it may be worth having both given the price of the US. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad strap, but it was stiff.

I've been wearing the UncleSeiko waffle for about a week now. It is a bit stiffer but after a week it's breaking in pretty well. The hole spacing hasn't been an issue for me. Overall, I think it's a pretty good deal IMHO. I have the W Jean also. Nothing wrong with it. But they are overpriced at 59. Spending 29 or 39 on an after market replacement strap is much more palatable to me especially since the quality is so close... Larry is good to work with and he ships fast. I've had some shipping issues with W Jean that were frustrating. W Jean made it right but still frustrating... I think I read somewhere that UncleSeiko(Larry) is working/thinking about making other straps like the XGL-731 and a 22mm waffle.

The W Jean waffle is super flexible. The thing is quite thin and designed that way. $59 for that little slice of rubber is indeed a stretch, however. I got mine a lot cheaper thanks to a very good dude here at DWC. I did have to ghetto it up a bit by drilling a tiny new hole in it ever so gently. ;) The holes have far too much space between them.

Terry, thanks for the cool info. Late to the thread here, but it's good to know someone else makes a waffle that is not ridiculously priced.

All these rubber straps tend to break in after wearing them a bit.

I will attest to one thing in all certainty... I tried 5 rubber straps on my 6105. As per another Seiko guy here... the waffle is the only way to go.

I guess some of the WJ's were nice straps and then he got a different batch that wasn't???? Hell I don't know but it is good info to keep in the back pocket if I ever need one.

I got one. It's actually pretty nice, although I'm not a huge fan of rubber straps.
