Why are used GS's selling for so cheap?
Why are used GS's selling for so cheap?
I've seen GS's here and other places selling for much less than other brands. WTF?

GS has never had good resale value. Also, not a yuge market for 35mm like the one you posted.

It seems like all watches are taking a hit recently - I see 14060m selling for $8500 when a year ago they were all above $10k.
The market is soft in general and the weaker the brand the biggest the hit.
GS is niche, so it makes sense.
I just got an excellent condition titanium Chronomaster for sub $1k, it’s over $2k new. It’s a buyer’s market

Dress watches have always been tough to sell. It's even worse now that many people are still working from home.

Yep, we’re about to head into a recession so it’s a buyer’s market for pretty much everything but the holy trinity and rolex

Tell me about it!
Re: Why are used GS's selling for so cheap?
It’s not just GS, but I’m sure it’s about the economy. I priced my Omega lower than all others, but still no joy. Same for the MKII. It’s a shitty time to be a seller.
I just love Jeff’s GS, but can’t add unless I sell.

I agree it's got a lot to do with the economy. I also think GS value retention isn't the greatest, but for what they offer I think they're a bargain. The finishing and movements IMO put them above anything in their price range, yet I'm struggling to get 50% of MSRP on a watch that's essentially new.

I think their designs are also a bit watered down. You can get the same basic design in a SARB, SARX, King Seiko, Presage and even with Citizen with varying degrees of finishing and dials. That's just my opinion.

Current economy aside, I think once more watch enthusiasts experience modern Grand Seikos for themselves, the secondary market will get more robust. They’re just too good. But Grand Seiko outside of Japan is still so new that not enough people have taken the plunge on one yet. This is a great time for anybody who’s interested to snag an absolute bargain on a used one though.

This is especially true of the basic quartz or auto dress Grand Seiko watches like the one in the link.... combined with the fact that models like this are pretty classic so old ones look just like new ones. The newer spring drive/ high beat models like White Birch, their sport GMT's, etc.... hold their values ok. Not excellent, but ok.aztecknight wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 2:23 pmI think their designs are also a bit watered down. I’m not sure.
The design may be similar, but one just needs to look at a GS for 30 seconds to see and feel that they are leagues above the mid priced seikos in terms of fit finish and everything.
On the second point, design consistency over many years is usually something that happens that make desirable products (think Rolex AP, some omega, Porsche etc)
I really think it’s just due to a combination of
1/ smaller potential consumer pool (GS are niche) and
2/ economy not looking great

Re: Why are used GS's selling for so cheap?
This was a JDM model I believe. At that time GS was only known by a small majority of watch collectors, and marketing to US buyers was pretty much nil. Oh and that size of Watch will only interest a very small range of buyers, that is part of the reason for the lower price point.

Re: Why are used GS's selling for so cheap?
I just snagged a near mint SBGJ239 which is the green dial, high beat gmt with the sapphire bezel for $4,500 CAD ($3,400 USD). Maybe it's because it was bigger than most GS at 43mm but it wears like a 41mm watch. Hard to beat that value on the used market. Seller bought it from a dealer in order to get their pepsi GMT and was happy to sell it after 2 weeks for a loss as he never wanted it in the first place.
