Ridley Watch Service on Vintage?
Ridley Watch Service on Vintage?
I’m considering this Tudor sub, 7928 which received a full Ridley servicing. I’m a rank amateur on this so my question is this - the service included a new crown which is a modern trip lock, included a relume, and a service dial. All of those things make it a great daily wear watch, but is it a frankenwstch because of the changes? Is the value hurt?

No idea, but holy smokes, an $800 crystal?
Re: Ridley Watch Service on Vintage?
One of the things I like about this piece - it’s got a domed acrylic like the ‘70s Rolex, not the tall “high hat” version you see on most of these. But again, not totally to original spec …

I pinged our watchmaker who said the dial loses its value at that point, so don't go if you are looking for an investment.
But if the price is right, some good looking T dials have been relumed with tinted luminova or inactive tritium paint, to restore the vintage look. I have a relumed 6159 and love it, but I'm not a purist.
Re: Ridley Watch Service on Vintage?
That's one expensive service years ago had SF Rolex service center service my Tudor snowflake for 500 and at the time I thought that was expensive. Like Tom said if the price is right and not an investment due to the dial and it's going to be your daily wearer for a while go for it. And if you hold on to it for years like I did mine it will be worth more than you paid. Think I paid 2000 for my snowflake and still can't believe what it's worth now.

I like it, but I am a sucker for originality and yea that dial hurts the value. If you ever tired of it a bunch of collectors would not be willing to buy it. I would pass unless you want it for an everyday, get a smoking deal, and don't plan to sell

Ultimately I couldn''t resist...
I'll say this for the servicing: its keeping really good time on the wrist, and its getting alot of wrist time!
The service and upgrades make it an everyday wearer for me that has some really nice vintage features as well. My first Rolex had a domed acrylic crystal like this one, and the bi-directional frriction bezel which I've always preferred. I know the OEM service dial would hurt on resale, but frankly I think its a better dial than the original rose version. Even though its been over thirty years, I just never fully accepted the Submariner dials with gold surrounds; they should have kept the unadorned hour plots in my opinion. It came on the correct (I believe) Rolex signed bracelet - 78360 - which is a bonus to me as I prefer nylon straps. I'll say this for the servicing: its keeping really good time on the wrist, and its getting alot of wrist time!
