New trench watch in the collection

Post by River Rat » Sun Apr 11, 2021 6:53 pm

Well found this one by accident on eBay. Not a bad price ether. It was in the book Military Timepieces by Whitney. Bought it from the son. Being in that book sort of made me buy it so I can sort of watch over it for a while. Should get it next week. Know not many into these but some stuff I collect for the history of them. WW1 did some huge changes in men's watches from the pocket watch to this Trench watch created how men wear watches on there wrist. The shrapnel guard protected the crystal when you crawled through the trench.

I think 33 or 34 mm but when you put them on a WW1 era type bund strap makes it look bigger on the wrist.

Main reason I got it was that it was in the book Military Timepieces by Whitney. Most of the collectors watches that Whitney used in the book including Whitney collection are all passing away. I used that book for ID so much it is falling apart when I got into military watch collecting. If it was not for all those collectors adding photo's and info the knowledge to this book would of be lost due to there passing . It's a privilege to own a watch that was in this book this book was like the military watch collectors bible.

Nice score Mike. I've always thought WWI trench watches were interesting. Back in the day when I worked for Movado, this reproduction of a Movado trench watch was part of their retro "1881" collection. Always wanted one, but they were made of 18k gold, so too expensive for me.

Four bucks for any trench watch. 10 cents for any trench watch strap

Another article on trench watches

A lot of great info on trench watches on this site

Dam if I could go back in time I would buy that store out at 4 bucks a watch and those 10 cent straps to.

Has a interesting protection for the crystal called a shrapnel guard to protect the crystal when crawling through the trenches in WW1.

Had to barrow a strap off one of my other trench watches to wear this one so ordered one from a seller I never bought a trench watch strap from Prairie Flower Leather Co. they make a lot of WW1 reenactor leather stuff. Not bad for 25 bucks
