As an update, I just heard from Mr. Dellow’s son. They are interested in getting it back to the family. He said his mom told him his dad took it to a watchmaker who said it couldn’t be repaired. I am having it serviced now. So, if they want to cover my costs, I’ll send it back to them. I’d want the same if it was my dads.

Hmm...you know Mike, looking through some old pics, it appears that my Dad had a Gruen with cool shovel hands back in the day...

It turns out the family decided not to purchase it back. I feel guilty being happy about that as I really dig having it. At least I gave them, as his son said, a trip down memory lane.

All’s well that ends well.

This is outstanding! You did the kind thing by offering, but now you have a cool watch and a great story. Winning!

Wow, I missed this post somehow. What a brilliant and interesting story. I'm glad they didn't want the watch back. With it's history and even photos to go with it , it probably means more to you than too the family. Like most people back then he probably moved on to a new fangled quartz watch which the family would be more likely to remember him wearing.
