This is a special vintage diver to me - the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 1000M. It is the first generation version, made when Zodiac was still an independent watchmaker. It features a modified ETA 2824-2 automatic movement that is a solid workhorse. The case is finely beadblasted to a haze grey, and measures about 42mm without the crown and guards. The pillow case is about 46mm long, with 20mm lugs. This makes it extremely wearable despite being very stout - 1,000M WR. It has a thick flat sapphire crystal, and an engraved bezel that clicks firmly but easily with 60 clicks. The bezel is umm, unusual - it is reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog. But it is easy to grasp and turn! Signed crown screws down smoothly and firmly. Date window at 3, and very visible hour markers outlined in orange with matching phallic minute hand (the Gen 2 is distinguished by having red markers and minute hand).

But even more unusual than the bezel is its famous quadrant decompression times markers at each corner of the dial. These markings give you the time in minutes for decompression at the depth in meters. (Its a nice feature if you dive decompression depths/times, but I follow the rules my Navy dive instructors taught me - NO DECO!)

If you are old enough to have worn a watch to time your bottom time on a dive, this watch will remind you of all the great things that got you involved with dive watches in the first place. It is incredibly robust, solid as a rock, does what its supposed to without unnecessary extras, and looks like the tool it is. It sort of has a military connection, but definitely had a following among commercial hard hat divers. Best of all, it is not a piece of bling you'll see on your stockbroker's yuppie wrist....

I bought a cheap watch from a crazy man

It doesn't use numbers or moving hands
It always just says now
