Just got this back from the shop

Post by River Rat » Tue Mar 25, 2014 7:12 am

I really collect vintage stuff and for some of you this mite be to old for you  Well this is a ships chronometer from WW1 issued to the US Navy and mite of seen service in WW2. Well a few weeks ago I was winding some of the stuff in the collection and pop goes the main spring. Well I took it to my new watchmaker out here and he put a new main spring in not bad for 65 bucks. Well if any of you want to know what this was used for they did not have GPS for Navigation so this was used to do it the old fashion way with the stars time and math to find your location in the ocean.

This has a 15 jewel movement and has a wind indicator to tell you when to wind it and will run for eight days and has double wooden boxes the outer box had holes to bolt it down so it don't move on the bridge. The inner box had gimbals to keep the clock level at sea. Kind of rare to have one with the key and issue marks on the brass tub the movements in. Being ex Navy is probably why I collect nautical clocks and stuff.

That is really cool. It would make a nice desk clock.

Very nice! Does it run accurately?

Best wishes,
Myles

P.S. I often kayak past the old Waltham Watch Factory. Looks like it's being converted to apartments.

Yes it runs accurately still after all these years. Most ships this was were all the clocks on ship were set by since it was the most accurate clock on ship.
