Yeah well...you're an idiot. You're the same guy that thinks AP looks good.

Modern watch companies need to take notice of the countdown intervals starting at 15 on the bezel. This is a functional dive watch

I like it, but I like this one better:

As soon as James put it up on IG I inquired, only to be surprised by the sticker price. I guess I can dream.

It may be a functional dive watch, but it's still ugly.

Take yourself, for example: I think you're a smart guy and perfectly functional in the professional role that you possess, but it doesn't make you any less ugly.

Just for the record if anyone plans on buying one: Breitling had a habit of mixing the parts of different models back in the late sixties. Not like vintage Omega, where you can track models and parts somewhat, I'm talking major put-togethers. Quite legitimate, since it was done by Breitling (or ADs). But still.

If you compare the two ref 2005s above, you can see two different bezels. There are even another bezel that went with the 2005, also used on my 7650 (the co-pilot):

Image

They used to mix up the hands also. That said, it is possible to find an original one, but it has to be confirmed by paperwork or the degree of consistent patina. The last one requires some knowledge about the 2005 and the variations.

Personally, I've been tracking these 2005s quite a few years now, and have discovered the following:
  • These watches were pretty crappy in their day when it came to water resistance.
  • You see quite a few examples that are water damaged.
  • The mix-up with regard to parts makes it pretty hard to determine if the watch is a franken or not.
  • Given the bullet points above, I think they are quite overpriced, IMHO
Why the mix-up? One theory is that when you bought one of these watches back in the sixties, you could choose bezel and hand configurations and the AD/Watchmaker would put it together for you when you bought the watch. Kinda like Burger King.

The modified Venus 188 is decent enough, though.

As for my personal taste: I really loved these 2005s for a while, but now I have several problems with the watch. One thing that irritates me the most is the paddle hand. It is even more annoying when you meet the watch in person. So I am sticking to my hunt for a ref. 809 (Cosmonaute).

Good intel, Arnie. As a bit of a Breitling fanboy, I have always been intrigued by their vintage offerings, but there doesn't seem to be nearly as much knowledge or product out there.
