Crystal polishing

Post by demer03 » Fri Oct 11, 2013 6:06 am

It works! Not perfectly, but for those unobtanium sizes you can bring them back to life. I bought diamond paste from Amazon. It comes in three grits; 6, 3, and 1. Starting with a fine grit sandpaper I took the worst out and got this:

Then began working with the different diamond pastes. Dremel makes it much easier, but be sure not to heat up the crystal. My approach has been a little each day. Second round got me here:

Third round:

Today brought me to here:

It still could use a fifth go. Is it a perfect solution? No. It leaves a very reflective crystal and there can be a very faint fogging at certain angles, although I am not sure if that is in the inside due to the slight heating and whether that will dissipate over time. It is, however a viable solution for thos bad situations where you have little choice. In the end for $399 and $24 in paste, I have a fun grab and go DS!

That looks great Mike. Just a suggestion, you might beable to use something with low rpm's that won't over heat the crystal, for example a auto paint buffer.

Congrats, maybe Doxa can make you a service center for them.

Great post. I was curious to get some DWC input on diamond paste.

I'm guessing that's some sort of mineral crystal? Not too bad.

Nicely done Mike! This is good to know. I hope Becky doesn't try using this stuff for his (knob) polishing endeavors.....
