I'm the same way. So that leaves 1680, 16800, 168000, and 16610. Or you could look for a Sea Dweller - 16660 or 16600 (1665's are also ridiculous expensive, even the great whites).

Leaning 16800. The search begins. And it will be a long one as I am in no rush whatsoever.
Thanks all for chiming in and helping.

I would go for what we use to call the poor mans sub but today a Tudor snowflake sell for more these days but still cheaper than a vintage Rolex Sub.

Your kids got a good dad to pay for college my parents were poor. I joined the Navy and used the GI bill to pay for college it paid for the books and tuitions had to work days and go to school at night and then do the reserve on week ends to get by and ended up not owing a dime to many kids end up in college debt don't know why more don't do the military rout and the GI bill makes you get great grades you fail you pay the money back.

1680 or Tudor Snowflake. I had both, sold them both, and I'm a f**king idiot.

What about going a little different? the 16610LV. The Kermit, which may or may not be "vintage" gives you all the collectability, wearability, appreciation in a more modern sub - with all the features of a more modern sub. And...its a damn cool watch unto itself - it stands out with the dial and bezel.

It all depends on budget, but there's no such thing as a "bargain" submariner anymore, Rolex or Tudor.

The LV is cool but it's almost vintage expensive already. I got my NOS version to wear, and it just sits in the box.

It is. Still love it, but miss the 16600 Sea Dweller I traded for it back before prices got crazy.greenlightning wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 5:02 pmIs this my old one? Miss the hell out of that oneSteve O. wrote:16800...

It certainly is for me, but I'd be more interested in a GMT at the moment. Can't afford that, either.

Lunar Oyster (Kirill Yuzh) has a 1986 16800 up for sale. Gloss dial and applied markers. Box and papers. Condition looks pretty good to me for a 33 year old watch, but I'm no expert regarding original case condition, dials, hands, inserts, etc. Might be worth reaching out to Kirill if you're interested. I've done a few deals with him and always found him to be responsive and fair.Bradystraps wrote: ↑Thu Jan 24, 2019 8:56 amLeaning 16800. The search begins. By way of comparison, he also has a 16800 matte dial from 1981 and a 16610 from 1990.

I think Kirill does describe the condition well and price accurately. But holy crap, when did a 16710 become an $18.5k watch???JBZ wrote: ↑Mon Jan 28, 2019 8:22 amLunar Oyster (Kirill Yuzh) has a 1986 16800 up for sale. Gloss dial and applied markers. Box and papers. Re: Best vintage Sub to buy today?
Yeah, the prices on these are ridiculous. The funny thing is, depending on who you talk to, some consider the older 3185 a better, more reliable movement (though I imagine it's just splitting hairs). It's just a matter of rarity. Very few 16710's were made with the 3186 before Rolex switched to the maxi case and ceramic bezel.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Mon Jan 28, 2019 7:51 pmthose are the guys who fuck up the watch gig for mematt.wu wrote: ↑Mon Jan 28, 2019 7:46 pmNOS + 3186TSD wrote:I think Kirill does describe the condition well and price accurately.
