One day I will not be able to afford this hobby
Re: One day I will not be able to afford this hobby
They're a well known site which gives the illusion that they are knowledgeable about prices. Their customers don't want to compare values. If they say it's $3900. It must be.
I saw a member of another forum pay them $500 for a GJ Cleverly Metta strap. Paper thin, edge material with little dicing. Could have bought better for half that price, but Cleverly and Limited draws them in.
Same with well known site members. Always seem to get better prices for their watches over lesser known members.
Owned a few Longines military models. Bought cheap off Ebay and sold for double. Now same are selling for 4x what I sold them for.
More buyers out there willing to grab the in watches.
Bet it was a hipster that bought it. Real collector would know better.

the supercompressors have been climbing pretty consistently for that past 3-4 years.
Re: One day I will not be able to afford this hobby
The first watch that I ever sold online was a 42mm Jaquet-Droz Super Compressor for the princely sum of $299. That was nearly fifteen years ago, way before vintage prices began climbing. Hell, I think that I bought it for around $100. from and old clock dealer friend, so thought that I made a killing. Then there's the 6536/1 Sub that I let go for about 1/10th of what it's worth today...gwells wrote:the supercompressors have been climbing pretty consistently for that past 3-4 years.
Mike's right. Pretty soon most collectors are going to be priced out of the market, and that definitely includes me. Gone are the days of ebay "barn finds" and sleeper deals. Everyone with a crappy base metal cased watch with a diver's bezel thinks it's worth a fortune. 99% of the stuff on ebay nowadays is either junk or way overpriced. And you can sure as hell forget any dealer site and most sales forums. Every once in a while you can find a quality obscure branded vintage piece for a reasonable price, but not often. The search is fun though.
I'm glad that I held onto a few that have reached the stratosphere, but unless I win the lottery, it's doubtful some will be replaced.
I guess to put things in perspective, back when I bought my first ride, a 1970 442 W30 with a 445 and Hurst Dual Gate shifter, it was just a $2,500. used car...

Yeah that's true. Vintage watches are discovered and are now placed in the ssme category as art, vintage cars and other luxury goods. It's a shame, although it was just a matter of time. Maybe in 30 years the price has fallen because everyone wears a smartwatch [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]Steve O. wrote:The first watch that I ever sold online was a 42mm Jaquet-Droz Super Compressor for the princely sum of $299. Tell you I am slowing down since most vintage watches I like are close to 1500-3000 and I have a few to many. There was a CWC issued chronograph I pm about that was for sale but was slow and on the fence and it sold kind of glad saved me some money. In the old days I would pull the trigger with out thinking but there were better deal back then. The last time I looked at a issued CWC chronograph for sale they were a little cheaper but prices are going up on every thing. Maybe I am getting cured of my watch habit.

We really should increase the post count to access the sales forum.

We should mandate a 6 month cooling off period on every watch sale.

Re: One day I will not be able to afford this hobby
Dam some one dug up my old post from a few years ago. When ever you think you are going to slow down due to prices you jump right back in. I see I was thinking of a issued CWC chronograph back then and backed off well I added one since and a few others. But they were deals and under market value each time. I am thinking of slowing down again due to prices don't hold your breath on that I all ways seem to see some thing I can't live with out if the price is right.

One day I will not be able to afford this hobby
Lol I remember when I joined that Darrin(?) guy accused me of posting just to get on the sales forum
(or RR, I don't recall) I was shocked and appalled but I stuck around
I just hope whatever I was doing back then didn't look as silly as what this "diver" is up to...

I've always been told it's better to remain silent and think stupid thoughts, rather than open your mouth, or put in print, and remove all doubts.
I'll put speed posting in the same category as stupid question posts as forum pet peeves.
