Doing stuff with my old man - aka, breaking lockdown blues

Post by stonehead887 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:26 am

So after what has been for many many people difficult and challenging times, seemingly with nowhere to and nothing to but wait, I have taken the first opportunity to spend a few quality hours with my dad.
As many of you know now, I have posted quite a few stories of stuff we done. After what feels like a lost year, I am gonna make up for it now.
Been planning to build a new watch box to house my Bell and Ross collection, aviation inspired so who better than my dad, former RAF Halton tinbasher.
First order of the day was to 'borrow' a suitable base and then to template the basic shapes.
I will hopefully keep this story updated as it progresses.
Stay safe all and make it count ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Subscribed. This should be good.

Post of the year last year was the motorcycle ride thread. So much awesomeness!

Spend as much time with Dad as you can!

Reconnaissance Mission, otherwise known as looting expedition, at the local aviation museum where my dad volunteers.
Loads of inspiration and ideas for the watch box, really looking forward to this build ImageImageImageImageImage

Hey guys

Hope everyone is keeping safe. Today marks 1 year since first lockdown in UK.
Time then for an update on my latest watch box.
My dad is buying 22 gauge metal to start cutting the outer panels and we shall rivet them together and on, like an aircraft skin.

Inside is taking shape, I have made the base frame that will hold my Bell and Ross collection (obviously I need to buy another square on).

First fit I am rather pleased with, the watches are positioned and pretty much as I had in mind. I shall not reveal just yet how it will be finished on the inside.
I have some aviation plaques that I will see if they fit. The deep embossed one I think I will try and infill with matt black paint and polish raised letters.
(Enjoy the boat tail and books) ... I used to have a '71 ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Hey guys

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I have made some more progress on the new watch box.
Got the watch holder covered in black vinyl. Pretty pleased with the outcome. Insides are also covered to protect watches when putting in slots.
Black screws in corners is a nod to Bell and Ross design.
Its all screwed and glued together and for now just popped in. Thinking of adding some 5mm red, green and clear diodes for lighting.
I am hoping I can see my dad again soon in a few weeks and we can get some sheet metal cut and riveted
Hasn't cost me a penny so far. Everything either 'liberated', upcycled or had in the garage ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage
