Speed Limiters are coming or rather are already here

Guys, have you heard about this?
Am guessing our friends across the pond are already starting to
deal with this. But it sounds like there are new speed limiters
being put within cars.
Intelligent Speed Assist What it’s called, and it’s being fitted in
all new cars within the European Union. So what do all of you
think?
And how exactly will it work?
Will it be an alarm? Or warning? Or actually slow the car down?
Not allowing you to go above the speed limit.

If it slows down the people that drive 40+ mph on my quiet, residential 25mph street with children regularly playing outside, I am all for it.

Yeah. Therein lies the problem. I like the idea in theory because reckless driving is a major pet peeve of mine, but the theory and execution of it are two very different things.

I think we reached Peak Vehicle Legislation about 30 years ago. Unfortunately, the legislatures of the world feel differently.

If I'm not mistaken, there's legislation in the US that requires cars built after some year in the near future have a remote kill switch, as well as equipment to determine if you're sober enough to drive.

I’m not saying I’m a proponent of this BUT-after a weekend trip to Philly and driving on the interstate, I will say it’s the few who ruin it for the many.
I won’t bore you. You’ve all been in horrific traffic on interstates and freeways, but when I continually encounter the asshole who is doing 120 in a 70mph zone and bouncing in an out of lanes passing everyone like it’s race car weekend, and endangering lives, I can see why this would be a good idea.

Believe me, I am one of the biggest opponents of the theory of a nanny state you could imagine. But when someone on the road endangers me and my family due to thinking they are on a race track (as Don mentioned) and has complete disregard for the lives of others, if something can stop that I am all for it. I assume it’s different driving in what (I think) is the state with the highest population density the nation (NJ) compared to other areas.

There are asshats in all states. Just a few months ago, some meth head bought a Ram TRX and within hrs careened into a family of 4 killing 3 of them at over 100mph in a 55 down the street from my house.If a nanny state helps prevent this just one time, I am all in.

My new truck includes a “driving sense” app that tracks harsh acceleration, hard braking, and aggressive cornering.
I give it maybe a “B” in accuracy. It gives quite a few “false positives”. For example, it calls out “harsh cornering” in the traffic circles in my area.
That said, as the father of a couple kids coming up to driving age, I kind of like seeing the “report card” after they fly solo.
As for a “speed limiter”, I might be able to see it for teen drivers, or drivers coming out of a license suspension, but I don’t think it makes sense for all vehicles.

If you can’t work out why allowing remote access to the functioning of your private property isn’t great, then you’re way more optimistic that I am.

Multiple were called. He drove like 20 miles at speeds in excess of 100 mph on a curvy mountain rode. Unfortunately, they just ended up being first responders. Interestingly, but not surprising, he had multiple DUIs and police recovered numerous firearms from his truck at the scene...like 12. Perfect example of the system failing on every conceivable level.

JFC. Not that it would have stopped him since he’s a criminal, but why did he even have a driving license? I am not familiar with CO laws. If anyone should not have the privilege to drive, it’s this asshole.

Wouldn't the money to implement this be better spend on driver's education for kids? Obviously actually helping the problem isn't nearly as fun or newsworthy as shiny new toys/laws/technologies.
Old(er) cars rule.

I don't think this will cost much to implement in new production vehicles seeing that they're already super computers on wheels. The bigger issue is the privacy concerns and the backlash they will cause when found out.

Yet millions of people willingly put wiretaps (Alexa, nest cameras) inside their home and are happy about it
And many of us won’t….
