Clean smoke out of bands?

Post by srees » Tue Aug 23, 2022 3:05 pm

Hi! I was gifted quite a few bands that are saturated with cigarette smoke. Metal bracelets I've had luck cleaning well enough, but I'm stumped on leather, canvas...I haven't tried the nylon or rubber yet, but they also have a very strong odor. Actually, I did wash a rubber strap in water/dish soap, but that didn't help. There are some very nice straps in the collection - all kinds of leather too. Is there a recommended way to get these cleaned of smoke? It is so bad that sniffing one makes me retch. If I wear it the smell is everywhere and penetrates my skin so that I still smell it on me when I take the watch off. Hoping to find an answer better than 'replace them'...

Have your tried OxiClean (for anything other than leather straps)?

For the leather straps, you could try putting them in a zip lock bag with some baking soda.

Oddly enough…one of the things I love about one of my vintage tropic sport straps is it smells like rubber and cigarettes….just like the 60’s & 70’s. Nostalgia is a sonofabitch.

I’d probably toss the stinky ones, but second choice would be try the OxyClean & water in a bowl. Let it sit and give it time.

I mean, if the choice is tossing the leather...I can try anything on it to clean it and not worry about damage...

We picked up an ozone generator and many car places use a similar unit to deodorize cars.

Interesting idea. I may try that before tossing/selling a fortune in straps.

Soak in dish soap.

You could try to put the straps in a ziplock bag with coffee grounds.

I'd be happy to try a few to see of it helped..

My daughter picked up a jeep that had been smoked in a lot.
I ran a few cycles of ozone inside the car and it knocked out about 90% of the smell

Similar to an ozone purifier in a hot tub.
You can set the unit in a room to disinfect and deodorize the area.
We used two in our office through the height of covid infections.

From a site describing ozone treatment for cars...

"Ozone treatment is the use of the gas ozone (O3) to remove odors, bacteria, and viruses. Your detailer will place an ozone generator in your vehicle for a designated amount of time, depending on the strength of the odor. As the gas permeates your car, the odor is neutralized and any bacteria and viruses are killed"

Did you run the units while the office was occupied?

No, you don't want to breathe that stuff...

It ran at end of day while office was closed
