My Next Strap

Post by vbuskirk » Thu Jan 13, 2011 9:55 pm

I commissioned this Gunny strap a few weeks back. Seems like it will be arriving before January is up.

When will your Gunny strap be arriving Barry? Is that for the 112 Chris?

Yes, this is for the 112. I am disappointed by the above pic. It seems darker than what I wanted, but the quality of that pic and lighting is suspicious also. So, I'm patiently awaiting the real thing ... :tap:

You be the judge. Is this the same [style of] strap?

Chris, yours looks much darker, but the lighting is terrible in that picture.

I jotted off a quick note to Peter earlier this morning mentioning my concerns. He was very responsive, and his replies were fairly comforting. I'll do a full review after the strap arrives, and we shall see how the color issue turns out...

The strap arrived via FedEx before I left for work this morning (and yet, I only paid for EMS shipping). I haven't had a chance to play Barbies yet today (well, only 'just'), but the strap color is perfect, and it is soft like butta.

Let me wear it for a couple of weeks and I'll come back and update this thread with a few more details...

This is the weirdest feeling strap. Okay, not as weird as the Crazy Horse, but very unique. It is quite thick, and yet so light. It kind of feels like a dried out piece of cork. And then again, soft and pliable too. A very interesting strap, with a kick ass look. I'm thinking about ordering another. Maybe the 'Egypt' or the '74'?

Hey Rick-Holland. Does any of that ^^^ sound familiar?

Okay, it's been a couple of weeks. So, here is the promised update on my impressions of the Caitlin2 series strap made by Gunny.

Some Details

This one is 3-ply (or 6mm) with a sewn in GPF buckle. I also had it made a little long, and asked him to cut the tail long and pointy. Peter didn't have any brushed GPFs in stock at the time, but he was fine with brushing it himself before sewing it in, so long as I promised not to complain about the results being unprofessional. And it looks fine as far as I'm concerned; I'm satisfied. The thickness is awesome. As I must have said a dozen times by now above, this strap is very soft and comfortable. I've noticed two small issues that some might consider an imperfection. First, the distance from lug to "closed stitching" threads on the two pieces is not consistent. At first, my OCD alarm went off. But, I soon decided that this was intentional. I'm writing it off to artistic license, and it is probably genius. Because 'my view' versus 'the world's view' on the tail -vs- noon side could be argued to require/prefer slightly different designs. The other issue is the width of the strap. Luminor lug widths are 24mm. This strap is closer to 23mm. Again, there is actually an asthetic appeal to the marginally thinner strap when one is gazing at the wrist. However, if you put an OCD eye on the actual lugs themselves, that tiny gap talks to you like Poe's Tell-Tale Heart. I'm more inclined to think this was oversight than intentional. Or possibly even intentional only in the interest of optimizing the number of straps coming out of some piece of leather. I'm spreading lies and rumors at this point however.

All in all, the bottom line is that this strap is exceptional. The big picture, all things considered, holistic, "did he pull it off?" question can be answered without hesitation. This is easily my current new favorite non-OEM strap. Five thumbs Gunny. You're doing something meaningful with your life. Keep bringing it! I personally plan to continue supporting this artist.

There is a Toshi in that picture, but the one with the green thread is an Indy Heritage. :headbang:

Wow M8 :gayumbrella: that looks great with the green. My Indy Heritage has black thread which looks awesome as well. Maybe I will throw that on the 000 tomorow. David is doing some great work.
