New “Ed White” Speedmaster

Post by TSD » Mon Jan 06, 2020 7:59 pm

Sharing an OF thread with pics that a new stainless Speedmaster Ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 will be a 39.70mm “Ed White” with the 321B movement, sapphire crystal and display back, step dial, and ceramic DON bezel.

Very cool. I would've preferred a metal bezel and hesalite crystal, but lots of goodness in this one. Of course, I bet it's way too expensive (I'm guessing $12K) and if limited it will be extremely hard to get.

I like it quite a bit as a modern reworking... But limited production and a US$13k list price to begin with (are they all "reserved" by the speculators yet??) will probably make this a pass for me.

At this point you can get a vintage 321 Speedy for less than that.
Though about double what they cost 5 years ago.

Really like it, but agree that hesalite would have been nice. Alas, 13k is too much for me.

No doubt the watch is beautiful but I can't see spending $13K for - what to my mind at least -
is a small, incremental improvement over the regular Speedy Pro. I realize the devil is in the details and there are some here with historical significance but they're not significant enough to me to part with an additional $8K+. But nice to see that it's not an LE so I can get one when I eventually change my tune

Looks great, and I'd probably own one. However, I can't get with this "watches as expensive as a car down payment" thing. I'm conditioned to think of Omega as a 3k-4.5k brand and Rolex as a 4.5k-6k brand. I can't believe people are willing to drop five figures on mass market brands like that on the regular.

Up on Omega website.

13k is a lot, but given that the movement and design look as nice or better than watches costing 5x the price it doesn't seem so out of line. Personally I think the Omega movement looks nicer than the Lange.

Too much for me, too
Sometimes I consider flipping the .50 and getting an original 321, but then I realize I’m happy with it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the Lange movement is probably better finished.

I think the 321 is almost too pretty for a tool watch like the Speedmaster :stir:

I'm surprised nobody has crapped on the 'fauxtina' yet :). I think it actually looks pretty well done here.

I'm a hater of piss lume but either I'm getting used to it, or this one is well done, because it doesn't bother me.

Couple of thoughts here....
- omega is giving purists what they want (albeit at a price)
- omega is using this opportunity to upscale, and start to target the rolex Daytona. This has been their trend over the last few years and filling the gap in pricing the mid to low 10s where rolex use do sit (the new seamasters are amazing).

I think it looks great. Yes, expensive, and I still think of speedmasters before the 9300s as less than 4K (same way I think seikos should be $300 like the original 6309s). For new customers and most customers, they wont remember this stuff and say its amazing, when can I get it.

I'm in love with it. Whether I can bring myself to dropping $13k on one is another story. The typical AD discount may not be applicable on this model so it will be close to $13k IRL.

Omega may be targeting the Daytona market, and the 321 is a fine, durable, tested movement. But I don't think it's really comparable to the Daytona's 4130 (and I know this is a "new" 321, but the changes made from the original appear to be mostly cosmetic). I'm sure Omega's co-axial chronograph movements are a different story (though they're comparatively a lot thicker than the 4130, but usually come with more complications like a date and/or a moonphase).

That said, this is a cool looking watch. Just too rich for my blood, much like the Daytona. Brands like Longines, Seiko, Hamilton, and Oris are starting to look a lot more appealing these days.

Today’s incoming consumers mostly aren’t movement whores like we are. Otherwise, Lange would be up there with Patek and AP would be lower than Vacheron.
