Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
I’m being offered a trade for my IWC. It’s a Speedy Pro, 2017 vintage. Here’s the thing, though. The previous owner had the dial, bezel, and hands swapped out by a watchmaker for the Gemini IV set, blue with polished hands. He’s not trying to pass it off as a real LE, he’s quite up front that it was a mod done by a watchmaker in Houston. What do you guys think?
Do you Speedy fans have trouble with no date?
He has the original hands, dial, etc. about how much would it cost me to put it back to original if I wanted to?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

That looks great. No one is passing it off as vintage so buy it if you love it.
No date no matter.

I’ve dealt with that seller in the past and it was easy peasy...so at least don’t worry about that aspect.

I own the real version of that watch. There's a lot of value in the LE parts now that ofrei doesn't sell stuff like that anymore.
What's the trade value? A cheap watchmaker would probably charge $200 to swap back. I'd hit up Terry for a quote.

Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
For the other part of your question; I grew up in the hobby having to have a date and once I tried no date....... no, no-date is not an issue at all
Edit: I also have dealt with the seller in the past and it was smooth and hassle free

Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
That's a very sought after Speedmaster LE. I'd be tempted.
Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
You’d still have all the OG parts, money in parts for the LE stuff, and finally move the IWC.
Seems like a win to me

I might even be interested in some/all of the LE parts as spares.

I’m a flipper so I try not to buy modded watches as they are a PITA to flip later
That said, you have all the original parts to resell at base speedy pro price when needed (noticed I said when)
As far as no date, I’m a date guy, but really enjoy some watches enough not to care - the speedy pro is one of them
Good luck Henry!

Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
So, I’ll go against the majority re no date. If you need it, you need it...and I need it. I’ve tried the Speedy, the Explorer, and various iterations of the Black Bay and the Tudor Heritage Ranger. They don’t stick because I need a date. I blame mental illness.
That said, if you can live without a date, a Speedy is a fantastic choice. And I doubt switching the dial back would be super costly.

Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
I thought I needed a date until I bought a Speedy Pro. Wore it every day for a year and stopped missing the date after a few weeks. Now I prefer no date.

@Henryj
I think that trade is all full of win as already mentioned that is a great looking speedy dial and handset combo probably one of the best and even if not original looks great IMHO.
Plus as you are getting the original dial and hands you can always swap them back and the Gemini dial and hands are growing in value as there are not that many around.

No trouble with no-date, but I don’t have an issue with lack of date in most watches.
The dial is perfect as is, IMO.

Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
I don't even set the date on my watches when they have one. It offers me zero utility.
Re: Need an opinion on a Speedy Pro
No date is better on the speedy in my opinion. The date messes up the classic look.
