Could 19mm Strap on Speedy Pro Work?

Post by dshap » Sun Aug 22, 2010 12:17 pm

Do you guys think this strap would work with my Speedy? It's 19mm and made for the smaller Speedmaster Date, but I want it SO SO much since it is exactly the strap that I have dreamed about getting for my watch. Since it's a 1mm too small, I'm worried it will look like shit though, especially since it has a curved end. What do you guys think?

Don't you think eventually the gaps will drive you crazy? That'd be my concern. I think something will be OK and then I end up focusing on it obsessively... I'm more OCD than most, though.

Sweet strap but it would drive me crazy if there was .5 mm gap on each side.

I am not too familiar with them but IWC makes some similarly looking straps in 20mm. Jae might be able to share some of his IWC knowledge here.

first off, shap youve got great taste in watches and straps!

secondly, here is my rule of thumb. You can pretty much get away with a 1mm discrepancy in strap/lug width without it being a problem. If you check out my vintage chronograph i got, the strap is 1mm too thin, but i never notice it. It is a strait end strap....

However, the strap you show seems to be precurved and made to fit the lugs perfectly, like a bracelet. i do not think itll look good at all on it. Maybe go to your omega AD and ask if they have it, and to see what it looks like on your speedy pro?

Never hurts to ask.

Interesting idea Barry. That strap is 21mm, but probably would squeeze on.

Anyone know anything about The Watchboys straps? Not curved end, but similar looking-

1mm shouldn't matter too much. I have a bunch of 22mm zulus that I wear on 24mm watches and it doesn't matter much to me, but then again, I'm pretty easy to please.

:naughty: :naughty:

Don't do it. Very noticeable, especially if you already know it's 1mm short while putting it on.

I recently received a 20mm watch that had a 19mm strap mounted, and it didn't take very long at all (not even wearing the watch) to notice.

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. I'm going to order the Watchboys strap I showed above instead of the Omega (though if Omega ever makes the strap in 20mm, I'll be the first in line to buy it). I've read good stuff about the Watchboys strap, so if it turns out well I'll let you all know.

+1

Matt's right. If you're at all anal - - and it sounds like you are - - your eye will focus in on the exposed spring bar every time you look at it. Much better to squeeze down a 21mm to 20mm than put a 19mm on a 20mm.

Update-

I put off ordering the strap for a while so I just got it today. Not impressed with it; the quality is average at best. Now I just have to decide if I should just keep it (it was 40 bucks), or go buy an envelope and mail it back to Canada.
