flightmaster size - some perspective

Post by rockmastermike » Sat Sep 08, 2012 3:42 pm

we all can look up and/or post up case width and height to the mm and having solid numbers is a good start to understanding the case size. We see specs and make a snap decision, too big or too small. We see pictures of a watch and judge the size without having anything else in the photo to give perspective. In a perfect world, watch decisions should not be made in a vacuum - However it is not a perfect world and sometimes we have to go on faith and buy without trying.

I heard the rumors and read posts of the hulking beastly flightmaster and took a chance anyway....and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It is not overbearing nor overwhelming on the wrist......especially when compared to other watches in the box. Before they were packed up and shipped off, I took a few shots comparing the flightmaster to the MM300 and the Seatime.

No numbers here on purpose - I'll let the pictures do the rest - check it out:

Nice comparisons. I have owned my flightmaster for 30 years. Omg I am old.
Anyway, back then it was a large watch, today not really when compared to a lot of what is out there.
cheers,

Keith

Cool comparisons, and next to the Stowa it doesn't look very large, looks pretty "normal". Thanks for the pics.

Keith, you have to post up pictures one day or maybe you have and I missed it already.

Yeah - that is my takeaway, too. for reference, I have a 7.5 in wrist so other's mileage may vary

I had always thought it was huge as well, but I may also have confused it with the Big Blue diver from that period with the similar shapped case that Helson has remade. In any event, I am really impressed by that watch and I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, Rob - from what I've seen (I'm no expert) the Big Blue is in fact taller due to the thick bezel. I think the Big Blue is a cool watch.

Cesar - yes sir, I'm (slowly) getting there. plus it would look good on my incoming, if it ever gets out of the warehouse in Kentucky

Mine is a little unusual. It is a cal 910 where the original dial and hands were replaced with dial and hands from an 18kt gold Flightmaster. The watchmaker i bought it from (in about 1981) had disassembled a gold one for a customer who was selling it for the gold value.

OMG, Keith that is absolutely incredible! thanks for posting those. Is that a raised logo and raised letters?!? Beautiful, to say the least

I know jack about vintage, but I like the story behind yours. In some cases, the background of some watches is better than NOS and yours is definitely at the top of that list.

The logo and OMEGA age raised. Flightmaster is printed on. Ya it is kind of a cool story. The guy, Otto Freidl in Vancouver, was a fixture in the watchmaking world for quite a while. His son took over the business and it moved a couple of times. Still going but i think it is name only I don't think any of the family still runs it.
cheers,

Keith

Awesome!

This is a nice idea for a post, Mike. Well done. For fun, I decided to do this with the 1655, Big Block, and POC. I should take some pics. Side-by-side of the 1655 and POC is funny.

Thanks, Matt

Mike - it's the 911. The 911 has the seconds running at the 9:00 subdial and the 910 has a AM/PM at the 9:00 register.

I'm still learning as I go
