Another 8500 PO thread

Post by matt.wu » Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:36 pm

I very rarely visit WUS, but all the chatter over the new PO has me curious to learn more. Some good quality threads are cropping up on the Omega forum amidst the plethora of humdrum "PO vs Sub type" threads.

Here's another pretty cool, thorough write-up. I gotta say the gimmicks (like the mermaid... huge eyeroll) are a turn-off for a watch brand trying to elevate itself to a more "serious" level, but the overall event looks like it was hosted in a beautiful spot and the pics of the new PO's are very complete and clear (unlike a lot of the other real world photos we've seen). A lot of other colors that we haven't seen (like a black chrono and orange chrono, among others) are showcased as well.

Very cool. Jason, why weren't you invited to this shindig?

(Don't know if you guys have already seen this thread, but I hadn't - sorry if it's a repost of any sort - like I said, I rarely visit WUS, and even more rarely, the Omega forum)

And these were little points of interest:

:excited:
This new chronograph caliber 9300/9301 by Omega has been designed to fit watches sized 42mm and bigger, however, it will be only available in the 45.5mm Planet Ocean version for now. Omega is working on a small version of the chronograph movement to fit smaller watches though.

And for Kenneth or other fellas who are over the wrist-clock craze (:stir:)

What did you want to see, mermen?

That thread is where I get most of the stolen PO pics that I've been posting here. I've said it a thousand times already- I'm really excited for these babies.

I wish these were out when I started collecting but now, I guess the PO while being a super solid watch doesn't get me quite excited and drooling like it used to.

They look good, but 1) they're too damn expensive and 2) a display caseback on Omega's premier mass-marketed (PloProf notwithstanding) diver makes no sense to me. Still, I'd rock one of these any day of the week, even though the 45.5 PO is too big for my wrist.

I agree the display back isn't cool and the price beyond reasonable to me. But it is a pretty watch.

Same here; it's more of a commodity than a watch at this point. True, the same could be said of the Submariner, but somehow the PO just doesn't resonate with me like the Sub does.

Nice chrono implementation on the new POC, though.

If I can sip champagne in the Patek Philippe Salon at Tiffany's with a half-assed mohawk, porn 'stache and flip-flops, I'm sure you'll do just fine at your AD's unveiling.

Any smart retailer knows that despite appearances, everyone's money is the same shade of green. ;)

You better go to the event you lucky bastard. I called the NY Boutique today but they don't even have the new line in.

+3...

Not sure how much of a value the new P.O. is going to be. I personally think the current P.O. is a bit of a bargain for how much watch you get for your money. Here is my 45.5mm one in the London Eye...
