No glass could possibly be a strong as stainless, but if it were not capable of the stated depth, Omega would not have used a sapphire caseback.

You may want to rethink that. There a plethora of glasses out there that are as strong as if not stronger than steel. Also, depending on what your definition of "strong" is. But they are out there.
