PVD black
Can someone explain to me the science behind the PVD coating on the bezel and case for the black variants of the U50? I'm wondering if those are less durable over time, in terms of color, i.e. will the black chip, fade or wear over time, revealing the grey steel underneath?

This should answer most of your questions

My experience with PVD/DLC watches is that eventually they show signs of wear. Only ceramic is harder, but prone to cracking/breaking if hit hard enough.

The Sinn black coating is the most durable I’ve seen. It is possible to scratch it if you are careless enough, though.

Aegir had some of the best coating I have ever encountered.

My Damasko has held up better than any PVD finish I have had. It's over 5 yrs old and is still unmarked.

In terms of watch coatings I think TiN is the hardest. That’s why some vintage gold Seiko tunas still look great today.
I’m sure the Sinn coating is great but I’ve often questioned other brands methods. I own some DLC firearms (and TiN components) and it’s a much tougher coating than a lot of these so-called DLC watches. I wouldn’t own another DLC/PVD watch unless someone here could attest to the brands hardness.

Todd went the extra mile to get to produce a top quality watch.toxicavenger wrote:Aegir had some of the best coating I have ever encountered.
Had the smooth bezel (CD1?) had 22mm lugs and no date dial, it would be among my favorites of all time.
