Guys, some of you older farts may know the story of my lifetime Rolex ban. SWMBO decided that they were just bad luck for us. In casual conversation this morning, OK me expressing lust over Ben's SD, she said that she thinks the bad luck has passed and I can get a Rolex if I want one. What she didn't say was where the money would be coming from, which makes all this a bit theoretical for now. For now, I'm just looking to play research nerd and asking for recommendations on best choice references. My only criteria are date and movable bezel, and all steel. That seems like Sub, SD, or GMT II. Not a maxi-case fan, more a classic size guy.

This is just an attempt to broaden my knowledge for now, I'll probably be offering up my Seamaster as a partial trade when the time comes.

SD over Sub. 16710 if you want a GMT function, and black bezel if you want something not everyone has.

+1000^. You’re getting a great watch from a great seller. Plus… I am biased having owned; (All Rolex) Modern and Vintage Subs, Explorer I and II, GMT’s (vintage GMT’s). I am the proud owner of Ben’s GMT 16700 with Black and Pepsi insert and really like that one alot…..great versatile travel watch you can also swim/dive with…but alas the SD is wonderful. I prefer the five digits the best…but that’s me.

I have owned several Subs and probably 6 SD's and the newest SD 43 is the best of the bunch by a long shot.

I have the 16600, the Starbucks, and the 16710 and for sentimental reasons I would keep the SD over them all but close second is the Pepsi GMT. It’s about as perfect as a watch gets, especially with the lug holes. Good luck in your search!

Always wanted to see that 43mm SD in person - looks amazing.

Roll for sanity - As much as I like the idea of a Rolex, and as shocked as I am by my wife’s change of heart, I don’t really see a Rolex in my future. I just can’t quite get to $10k on my wrist is a good fit for me. Not being judge-y, it’s a purely personal feeling. On the other hand, I’m giving serious thought to offering up the Seamaster in trade on some version of a Pelagos.

I think Tudor is where it's at. A BB appeals to me far more than a modern Sub.

I've been in the same place. Owned a 16600, and it was my favorite Rolex ever.... had a weird inner conflict about owning one and wearing it given some hard times some family members were going through. Call it my own personal internal baggage so I sold it. I just feel better about wearing Sinn's, Seiko's, Tudor's and Omega's for some reason... not purely rational.
