Rolex Sub Question

Post by MDF » Sun Oct 18, 2020 7:54 pm

Currently I have a 114060 that is an excellent shape (grey market) not very old but I'm thinking I want the new sub because it's slightly larger, any advice on how to get one? I see it brand new at a Rolex AD and I think it's like 9,500 or 9,750 or whatever MSRP is of course it's probably not in stock. I look at recon and I see all the gray market at like 10,500 for the 114060 and the new one is 15k! Do you think the AD will take mine and put it towards the new one or am I better off trying to sell it myself? I'm really not understanding the pricing as two people here have already gotten the new one so they must have them in stock somewhere, what am I missing?

Regards,
Mark

AD won’t make a trade work for you, so best to find the new one at a fair deal, buy it, then sell the 114060.

That’s kinda what I’m thinking too.

Good luck finding the 214060 at an AD.

The new one (no date) is only $8100 msrp.

AD won't due a trade, especially if you bought from grey mkt.. so sell it privately...

I would try and build a rapport with a a Rolex AD, most won't show the most popular models in their display.

As soon as the Subs, GMT's, Exps come in they are gone to the ADs best customers.

Good luck- sucks to be looking for the new models...

Best thing to do is sell it privately. You'll make the most money that way. The AD wait times are terrible, but better to buy that way from a monetary perspective. Grey prices are nuts. Really just depends on how much you're willing to spend and how patient you're willing to be.

Try your local AD to see what they say. Go in person, not just call. They will either A. laugh at you, B. say they will put you on some real or imaginary waiting list, or C. actually be honest and tell you what it will take in other purchases ($$$$) to actually get one in months/years. At that point you will know what you are dealing with and you can decide where to go from there. Grey or private flipper will get you one quick, but you'll pay.

I happened to get lucky through other means.

One thing to consider is that the new one isn't really that different. I personally do think it is improved both aesthetically and under the hood, but if you don't mind the maxi case and are happy with the one you have, the search may not be worth it to you in the end.

ETA: As others have said, sell the 114060 privately if you decide to move on.

The AD near me takes trades- but they will only give a fraction of what you can get on the forums. Totally not worth it.

That's been my experience with ADs that take trades. They're worse than the greys/private dealers in that regard. A lot worse - they might be worse than a pawn shop.

Same here. I tried a long time ago with another watch and my AD just flat out told to sell it elsewhere. With Rolex you gotta remember he paid 60% wholesale for it. 114060 was $7500 so you’ll be lucky to get $5K for it on trade.

If I were you I’d sell and put my name on the list. 114060 is trending around $9-10 in mint condition. That’s plenty for a new 124060 with AD

For what it’s worth I read on a few places that the old model actually seems to wear bigger, because of the lugs.

Agree with this based on pics. I wouldn’t opt for the new one if you want larger. The effect of slimming to lugs is a smaller watch overall, regardless of measurement.

C&C has a very nice breakdown (which I assume is correct).

Yeah without having them in the wrist at the same time you can’t really tell size difference. But I can feel larger dial opening and the lugs of course is very noticeable. On strap it looks a ton better but even in bracelet with fat lugs and only 20mm bracelet I didn’t like the look. All fixed now

As it was mentioned if you’re looking for size increase it’s not there. It’s just all of the elements have been dialed in to look like a classic sub. Look at 114 center link how it’s deep in the case between the fat lugs, as if it’s too small and fell through the lugs. And the lugs themselves, too square and the 20mm width of the bracelet only exaggerate the odd look. If you like that look then I would not trade to get a bigger sub.

Thanks everyone it may not make sense for me to do this. It is very difficult for me to tell much of a size difference, the thick lugs don't really bother me that much but the new lugs do look better. If I do end up selling obviously I will try to sell here first as I'm a little nervous about selling what I call an expensive watch anywhere else.

Mark

If you want essentially a slightly larger sub, have you considered a Sea-dweller? The 116600 is 40mm but slightly chunkier than your sub, but with thinner lugs. The 126600 is 43mm. 116600 might be perfect for you. Here it is next to your sub, people that have owned both say the SD4k has a bit more heft and wrist presence.

I found the 116600 to wear much smaller compared to the 114060. Thicker and heavier for sure, but much more compact on the wrist and super short lugs. I loved that watch other than the top heaviness.

Same. And it wobbled on my particular wrist with the thick bubble caseback would not sit flat and constantly needed adjustment/recentering, hate when a watch does that.

I think the new Seadweller I think from last year would be awesome without the cyclops that is. I really can't afford it though.
