Steinhart Ocean GMT 39

Not been on here long, but I thought I'd post a review of a watch I've had a couple of years which can split opinions: the Steinhart Ocean, in this case a Pepsi GMT.

It took me several years to actually get this one, as I was unsure about the whole "homage thing". But, I wanted a GMT which would be a robust all rounder and a good do-it-all holiday watch. I also wanted a watch for work. I'm a cabbie, so wearing my Sub or Speedy isn't always the best idea for work. I decided that Steinhart had put enough of its own design into this for me to feel comfortable, so I went for it.

It obviously takes design ideas from a certain Rolex, but it has a different case shape and size.

It's a really robust watch. It feels solid and is nicely finished. The 300m water resistance is good and at 39mm it feels just right. Larger versions are available at the same price.

The case back is nicely finished and it has good, strong lume.

I have mainly worn it on leather or NATOs, it's a real strap monster, but have recently put the bracelet on. It's well finished and weighty with solid end links and screws to adjust it. There's no dive extension, but there is adjustment through the spring bar position in the clasp.

I had heard the clasp could stick out a bit, but mine's OK. Perhaps it's down to wrist shape? I had also heard that some people found the bezel tight. Mine's fine so long as it's kept clean. The only sign of the watche's price comes when you set the 24hr hand on the ETA movement. It's a bit spongy, and it adjusts independently rather than the hour hand doing so (as it would on the Rolex).

The cyclops works fine and the dial is well finished. All the printed text is crisp and clear and the applied markers are neatly filled with lume.

The watch has been accurate enough not to notice and the power reserve seems reasonable, but not amazing. I've not bothered timing it, but it'll keep going about a day and a half.

All in all l've been really pleased with it. It's a smart watch with some handy functionality that is as solid as anything and not too pricey. Just what I wanted for work and holidays.

Good review my man.
Those steinharts really pack a good punch when it comes to bang-for-buck.

Thanks for the great review -

I’ve had both the 42 and 39 of this model and for some reason - a surprise to me, actually - I prefer (and still have) the 42.

They are cool watches for sure... great daily for the office or travel

Thanks both

They do punch hard for their price.

Interesting

I bounced between the 2 but plumped for the 39 based on the look as much as anything..

The only change I would make on the ones I’ve had would be for steinhart to offer a deep gloss black dial vs the grayish dial they have now.

I quite like the dial finish. I think it’s one of the design features that make it its own watch.

A number of people have said that Jubilees are comfortable, but I’ve not yet tried one.

The watch has been accurate enough not to notice
I did the watch a massive misjustice with this comment. I've set and monitored the watch over the last 5 days. It's been worn, on a winder and in a watch box. Total variance over 5 days? +/- 0 seconds!

Wow!
