We lost Shane MacGowan today

Post by rockmastermike » Thu Nov 30, 2023 1:46 pm

I don't know if anyone ever listened to the Pogues and/or Shane MacGowan but we lost Shane today.

This hurts me

God Bless Shane MacGowan

Honestly I couldn’t believe he lasted this long. Loved his music back when he was still performing.

Ugh… I’m so sorry to hear this.

I was lucky enough to see them in concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco about 15 years ago in 2006. It was a great show in a great downtown venue.

I think I’ll be listening to “Fairytale of New York” quite a bit this season.

Saw him in concert numerous times. You never knew what you’d get with him in concert. Depended on his level of inebriation. An amazing talent gone too soon.

I thought you were a singer. I’m at a loss for words here.

I am a singer, in a band, but I’ve often thought about jumping to gangster rap.

I have no idea who the guy is though

Then, again, I’m old

He was the lead singer of the original Celtic punk band, the Pogues.

The Pogues paved the way for the entire folk / punk movement with bans such as the Dropkick Murphys (local to me) and Flogging Molly. Pretty much any rock band that has a banjo or accordion in the lineup probably has The Pogues to thank.

Fun fact, the bands name “The Pogues” is short for their original full name “The Pogue Mahones” which is kind of a phonetic bastardization of the Gaelic phrase “póg mo thóin” which means “kiss my ass”.

This is probably one of the Pogues most popular songs “If I Should Fall From Grace of God”

I saw him once live. It wasn’t exactly what I could call a concert. The dude was fucked beyond performing.

It was a roll of the dice through much of the 80s and 90s. I saw some amazing shows and some where he shouldn’t have been near a stage.
