The best road riding I've ever done

Post by andy tims » Wed Apr 12, 2023 6:12 am

Went to the Nurburgring with a couple of mates over the 31st of March to the 3rd of April for the Anlassen on the 2nd of April

Event details here

https://nuerburgring.de/events/categori ... e/anlassen

The journey down was horrendous. Heavy rain in the UK to the Eurotunnel terminal then heavy rain & very heavy gusting wind through Northern France & Belgium.

The Saturday was pretty decent. Mixed weather conditions & about 60% of the roads were dry while we toured around the area (at pace) on the brilliant roads

Cochem (on the Mosel river) was lovely

That's me in the middle.

The Anlassen itself was a comparative wash out

but in did dry out enough to get out on track & do a lap of The Ring. There were about 2,000 bikes as opposed to circa 8,000 when the weather is nice.

The run back on Monday, at least until our lunch stop at the Spa F1 circuit was just amazing. Clear blue sky, beautiful roads, perfect tarmac & light traffic. Regrettably my GoPro battery died without me noticing for the very best 25 miles or so of amazing riding, but these highlights give a decent impression of what it was like until we left Germany.

The riding in Belgium North of Spa is pretty good too, but the quality of the tarmac is not nearly as good.

Looks like fun! I wish I could get back on 2 wheels but....the she who must be obeyed says no. I live in an area with a predominant elderly population who just don't see motorcycles. I've been to too many fatalities in my profession as well. I 'll have to stick to MTB for my 2 wheel fun.

Awesome. Would love to do some laps on the Nordschleife!

I've done quite a few in a car, but not been since 2008. I never really got to the point where I could say I knew the circuit. That needs 100's of laps.

I don't like it when they allow cars & bikes out at the same time. I've been twice in the car when bikers have died. Not nice.

The Anlassen is a different kind of event. The (free) lap of the Nordschleife is pretty slow just because of the amount of bikes, but it ticks the box.

We stayed at the AM Tiergarten Hotel that's run by Sabine Schmitz's family. I met Sabine a few times. It seemed strange for her not to be there.

The bike cleaned & loaded up before setting off.

It didn't stay clean very long.

Soooo clean!

Sweet looking ride. I'm not sure if I could tour on a sport bike, even a naked, any more.
