Been wanting an M3 for quite a while and considering pulling the trigger. Probably preowned (2016/17). $50K range.
I want to know about other competitors you recommend.
Fire away!

I own a sporty 2014 Nissan Versa with 225k miles. I’ll make you a great deal.

How about a Hemlig LE?

Kia Stinger or Genesis G70 (maybe too big?)

Audi RS3 if AWD is important.
Those aren't very fast or sporty. Even the new IS500 F is arguably in the class below the M3.

It is, but 475 hp is plenty.... and it is one of the last great compact rwd sedans out there that you can get with a naturally aspirated V8 stuffed under the hood. Exhaust note sounds terrific (7,300 rpm redline) - would strongly recommend looking at them.
I like my turbo BMW wagon, but would really love it if it had an NA V8 under the hood. Turbo motors just never sound as good and naturally aspirated combustion engines are nearly extinct.
Problem is this is a terrible time to buy a car.... Todd didn't you just buy a BMW recently?

IS500 (which will be a special automobile) would get my money over any comparable M series. We’ll see what the new M2 brings. The new RS3 is by most accounts awesome.

$50k range I’d look at the GV70 with sport package. Not a sedan, but quick and nice.

Toyota Yaris GR.
Those, sadly, aren't sold in the USA.

An IS500F would be great. It, however, isn't available used.

A lot of great input here guys. Thank you!

In that price range, check out a used Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

Motortrends review vs competiion.

I have the 2.0 turbo Alfa Stelvio and absolutely love it.
If I could, I would upgrade to the Quadrifoglio stelvio in a heartbeat.
Take a Giulia for a test drive, it will be worth it

Kia Stinger or the G70 would be great choices. I am tempted by the Stinger myself. Totally under the radar, and really good.

Alfa reliability concerns me a bit. Not great reviews compared to BMW, Audi, Benz, Lexus, Infiniti etc.

It basically has a Ferrari engine
*Half of a Ferrari engine.... which can be a good thing or a bad thing whether or not you are an owner or an Alfa service technician.
Regarding road tests in this class of cars.... unless you are tracking them, tenths of a second really don't matter anymore.... Go for which one is the better experience, makes the best sounds, etc... The Alfa is supposed to be a riot to drive....

I’d much rather have an IS500 than that terrible current iteration of the M3. Although the M3 has an MT, which would be nice.

Lexus doesn't get much talk here. I've owned Lexus exclusively since the mid 1990s and there's just not going to be some of the "issues" with Lexus that one might have with German cars.

I saw one of those beaver face M3s on campus. It’s ugly but not so ugly I wouldn’t buy one, if I were shopping for a huge and bloated luxury “sports sedan”.

The IS cars always tend to feel heavy to me. The M3 always feel light but they are also hard to put all that power down. Prefer the M overall but looking forward to learning more about the IS500.
