14 Peaks on Netflix
Just started watching this and 13 minutes in I recognized the crown of a Bremont on the main climber. Anyone else catching this on Netflix? The task was nuts and the cinematography is terrific - as expected from Jimmy Chin. Seems solid so far.

Watched yesterday. Fantastic achievement, and the film is great.

Finished it. That documentary doesn't display how badass this accomplishment was. These guys are absolute crushers. Mad props.

Yes. It’s hard to comprehend the physical endurance and conditioning required to climb even one of these, let alone all 14 in such a short period of time.streetracer101 wrote:Finished it. That being said, there are many on the bleeding edge of alpinism that go largely unknown outside of the community due to focusing on previously unexplored peaks/routes/seasons without the popular glamour of “the 14”. These are invariably more remote and technically challenging, without the base camp support systems the 8k meter peaks have in place (whether it’s shown or not). It’s a sad and highly preventable fact that most of the people seen as pioneers in alpinism die while doing it eventually.
It’s a weird thing to be into.
If you can find the short (20 min) documentary “Cold” about the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II, it’s worth checking out for a brief look into the true crazies.

Great recommendation. I agree alpine activities are an odd hobby. I slowed down in the last 2 years, but have still gotten myself into several hairy climbs and although they often suck, I always look back with fond memories.Chocodove wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 8:45 pmYes. I started watching it last night and it does feel kind of rushed. Less than two hours, 14 climbs, and also trying to tell the guy's backstory. It's a lot to pack in. The cinematography is terrific.streetracer101 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 01, 2021 8:13 pmFinished it. That documentary doesn't display how badass this accomplishment was. These guys are absolute crushers. They spent less than a minute covering some of the climbs. It would’ve been better as a short series. The accomplishment is unreal, but I was disappointed with the presentation when I finished it.

Just finished watching it. Such a great task in such short time period. Wonder what Nim plans to do next from his final wordings in the movie. Whatever it is I would be following, "one life live it".

Even one of those peaks is an amazing accomplishment but what he did was unbelievable! His wife was amazingly accepting and accommodating too, wow! Great documentary!

Watching the Alpinist now. Better flick. Unfortunately, like many of these push the envelope type athletes, he's already died.

Re: 14 Peaks on Netflix
If you enjoyed this (and have access to BBC iPlayer) check out “The Last Mountain”, I thought it was a pretty mad glimpse into the mindset of climbers and the aftermath for their family’s.
I couldn’t help but think Nims must have either been one hell of a fecking soldier or a complete liability TBH, crazy level of “fuck it, let’s craic on”
