A little off-topic, but Wtf is up with used car prices lately? Supply? Demand? Both? Looking at moving to a coupe from my X5M, maybe a Cayman or older 911, and the prices are insane. And new cars? Have to get in line.
It crazy.

Microchip shortage is creating a real mess. Cars are literally sitting outside manufacturer’s facilities without ECUs

I saw a car that color this week too. I don’t remember the make. Might have been a Taycan.goaliechris wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 4:26 pmA little off-topic, but Wtf is up with used car prices lately? Talk about effing up a car. Those wheels and the paint are hideous.

Saw the new Land River in person- looks WAY better than in pictures, and is significantly larger than I thought it would be from the pics.
New Bronco looks like a kid’s toy, is too small, almost a copy of the FJ Cruiser. Hard pass.

Shortage of micro chips is a factor. Really pinching the production capacity of manufacturers.goaliechris wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 4:26 pmA little off-topic, but Wtf is up with used car prices lately? Supply? Demand? Both? Used prices have been high for a long time as new cars get increasingly expensive. Now that new car supply is terrible, used prices are even higher.goaliechris wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 4:26 pmA little off-topic, but Wtf is up with used car prices lately? Supply? Demand? Both? With many vehicle manufacturers pledging to end production of ICE-powered vehicles, I expect the prices of used ICE-powered vehicles to skyrocket. Electric cars don't make sense for many of us, yet they're going to be crammed down our throats.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 8:39 amUsed prices have been high for a long time as new cars get increasingly expensive. I also smell Cash for Clunkers 2.0...where the "clunkers" are perfectly good cars, but not electric.

It's hard to not look at 600hp BMW M cars, Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, etc as the high water mark for ICE cars. I don't know if ICE is going to actually get phased out, but I do know that there's no way that the growth in ICE performance that we've seen over the last 10 years is going to be replicated over the next 10.Selym wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 9:27 amWith many vehicle manufacturers pledging to end production of ICE-powered vehicles, I expect the prices of used ICE-powered vehicles to skyrocket. That's a reasonable assumption...maybe. What is the magic year, 2035 for GM and CA, parts of Canada and others? GM and CA are so extraneous to me and millions of others, especially CA, who cares. We shall see.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 11:13 amIt's hard to not look at 600hp BMW M cars, Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, etc as the high water mark for ICE cars. Re: Car Spotting
I agree. People get all worked up about manufacturers proposing stopping ICE car sales in 10-15 years, but remember that only about 7% of all cars on the road are replaced each year, so even if new ICE car sales stop in 2035 (unlikely), it would take until 2050 until most of cars on the road were electric. Battery efficiency is improving at around 12% annually, so by then range issues won't be a problem by then and likely we will have moved on from Lithium to more sustainable battery technologies.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon May 10, 2021 11:13 amIt's hard to not look at 600hp BMW M cars, Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches, etc as the high water mark for ICE cars. Re: Car Spotting
The availability of gas for purchase is, I think, the real lever that could be used to get ICE cars off the road. So long as gas and motor oil are around, I'm going to have a fun ICE car.dnslater wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 5:46 amI agree. Re: Car Spotting
I just read that tire manufacturers have now needed to design a new class of car tires that are capable of standing up to the 5000+ pound weights of these EVs. There’s no way that you can replace every car on earth with an alternative that weights 1000-2000 pounds more and not creat some seriously negative unintended consequences.Seppia wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 8:12 amI’ve never understood how people can think a gigantic electric hummer/f150/cyberturd is better for the environment VS a fuel efficient 4 cylinder ICE.
Then I remind myself 99.9% of people can’t do math, but I would have hoped the 10.1% of us who do should have been able to educate the rest.
Not to mention that one of the only things that might be worse for the planet than oil extraction is... the mining of rare earth minerals.
Re: Car Spotting
I've driven a full electric eGolf for the last 5 years. It's not a let down. And that's coming off driving some rockets (JCW Mini, Audi 3.2 Quattro, S2000, GTIs...)JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 8:01 amSo long as gas and motor oil are around, I'm going to have a fun ICE car.
But we aren't even close to not having an ICE or two. I have an old truck that gets 10mpg and isn't going anywhere, because shitty range on the eGolf can't get me across the state.
Re: Car Spotting
I just think a lot of this is pie in the sky type thinking. For every solid pro argument, there's a solid argument against. Regarding all these potential dates, that I agree are total BS, let's see how relevant GM and others are in 2035, with their "carbon neutrality", which is quite the oxymoron.
Re: Car Spotting
It's tough to educate. Many don't pay enough attention to grasp what's being communicated. Many believe what's in the prettiest ad or slickest format. Many only believe the information that fits the answer they want to hear. Put all that together and most info just goes in one ear and out the other. Best course of action is just don't worry about it and go about your life in a fashion that you enjoy.Seppia wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 8:12 amI’ve never understood how people can think a gigantic electric hummer/f150/cyberturd is better for the environment VS a fuel efficient 4 cylinder ICE.

Re: Car Spotting
There is so much left to innovate in ICE. Variable vain turbos with electric assist can increase power and/or efficiency incredibly. They can also be powered via regenerative braking which adds very little weight and complexity. People are making insane HP by running their cars on E85 rather than regular gas and those are just regular dudes with a laptop. Just imagine what GM or VW could do.Seppia wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 8:30 amI haven’t looked into the matter seriously, but intuitively hybrids should be the way if one actually wanted to save the planet.JP Chestnut wrote:

There is so much hypocrisy with the green stuff it makes ME* sick
*I am a lefty european socialist
Seeing the current limitations of ICE and responding with beta level EVs is as smart as cutting your foot off because you have an ingrown toenail.
On edit: improved catalytic converters would be another obvious thing to invest in where the governments of the world not pushing the market to EV.

This is exactly my concern, especially when China accounts for 95% of the worlds production of rare earth minerals, and we all know their environmental record.JP Chestnut wrote:I just read that tire manufacturers have now needed to design a new class of car tires that are capable of standing up to the 5000+ pound weights of these EVs. Also our electrical grid is going to need a monumental upgrade to even come close to handling the charging of all the electric vehicles in the future. For the foreseeable future I still see a huge need for fossil fuels, and hopefully until my driving days are over.
I've been hearing the sky is falling climate alarmists for most of my 60+ year lifespan, so I'll finally admit to climate change.
It's called Spring, Summer, Fall, & Winter.
Re: Car Spotting
We're being pushed into electric cars, while at the same time, massive power plants are slated to be decommissioned (the Mystic Generating Station just outside Boston, for one example).59yukon01 wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:43 amAlso our electrical grid is going to need a monumental upgrade to even come close to handling the charging of all the electric vehicles in the future. One has to wonder if the goal is to get us out of ICE-powered vehicles, or to get us out of personally-owned vehicles altogether. You know, the "you'll own nothing, and you'll be happy" jibber-jabber. Of course, the elite will still roll around in their enormous SUVs.
