A couple of follow up notes after I did car shopping yesterday, at a smaller, local Subaru dealership (Annapolis, MD). Just one data point, but I haven't dealt with a dealership in 3 years, so I was very interested to see how it went.

- Decent inventory on the lot. Not full, but had every model, just not ever trim level of every model, all priced about 10% over MSRP
- Small inventory of CPOs. I was most interested in those, as I prefer that way to buy, especially giving the upcharge for new noted above.
- Picked out a car I liked, went to lunch with my old man. Got the classic cliched message "another couple just walked in to look at the car you wanted!!!"
- Got back with a reasonable offer in mind, and they did come really close, so I pulled the trigger, after the other cliched "Let me talk to my manager..." bit
- They were willing to order whatever I wanted, again at the 10% over pricing. Not willing to negotiate on that.
- Picked up a nice example of a Crosstrek, really excited about it as my new family "adventure" vehicle. Terrible pic for now, more Monday when I pick it up. Stoked about a newish car, as I've only driven older, european cars for the last decade.

Nice. We’ve had a Crosstrek for almost 7 years now and it’s done well on many adventures. Our other car is an Outback I bought during peak Covid when they were essentially giving them away.

I know the answer is "it depends", just curious if anyone has had any experience with the softening of the market.
I’ve found that a CPO Subaru costs almost as much as new. If buying a Subaru I would suggest you try to go new.

I agree. It’s already AWD/4 Motion and has the same motor as the GTI. My sales girl has the same rig with an APR+ Tune. I’ll have the dealer drop that in ours at some point. You can also get it R Line trim with bigger wheels and stiffer suspension, so 70 more ponies would be perfect.

I’ve had good luck with APR, but give it some break in miles first.

VW could tune this from the factory, do an upgraded suspension, GTI seats & steering wheel, DSG, etc. and have a factory sport AWD SUV. It would be a hit.
I’d try one for sure.

Picked up a 2001 996 Cab the other day, should be fun for the summer. All maintenance done, IMS, AOS, Rear main seal, suspension, exhaust, etc. Of course it is 6 speed manual, all detailed (pic is before) now Image

That’ll be a great ride for the summer. Congrats and when you’re ready to move on let me know. The wife would like something like that for a summer car.

I was just teasing. FWIW, “professional courtesy” only goes so far. For example, two troopers up here are pursuing new career opportunities outside of law enforcement after getting stopped by local PD (DUI while off duty).

That is kind of the flip side to the LEO career. What might be an inconvenient, and potentially costly, mistake for many of us could cost a LEO their career (same goes for military).

You’ve also got to be careful with those “countermeasures” in Canada. I think they are prohibited in several locations.

As for speeding, my opinion is it is all about location. In town? Just don’t. On an open multi- lane highway? Keep it reasonable. In northern Maine where it is just you for miles and miles? Do what you want, but be ready to self-rescue if you wreck.

To go full ludicrous speed, we are lucky to have the old Loring AFB up here that allows top speed runs on the old runway.

Congrats! Everyone who has the means should have the opportunity to own a 911 at some point. Miss my 991 a lot, but it didn't make financial sense to keep it at the time.

Nice! I loved my Boxster. I know it's not a 911, but it was so much fun. Now I get to drive a pickup while my wife gets the drop top. (BMW, not Porsche)

All true. I purchased a 2020 Mustang And proceeded to modify it pretty significantly. I couldn’t keep the speeds anywhere near reasonable, so I traded that sucker in before I went to jail.

I’m quite content with the current ride, as it’s not comfortable at extralegal speeds.
