Got scammed

Post by deepcdvr » Tue Jan 02, 2024 6:53 pm

FAK

Been buying/selling/trading for 20 years and although many have tried to scam me, I’ve always caught them in the act; not this time.

I reached out to FuII_Television8757 about buying a Doxa via Reddit chat after replying on his thread.

About 3 minutes later he sent me a message (not a chat) with the same user name and said he saw my post but his chat doesn’t work from his office. Anyway, we made a deal and I sent him $1250 via the Wise app. He immediately sent me a USPS tracking number which had not yet been activated. No biggie as he said he’d ship the next day.

An hour later I got a chat from him and he said “were you going to message me about the Doxa?”.

I then went to my messages and checked - I had been chatting with - and sent money to - FuII_Television8757.

See the difference?

No?

The address above actually uses two capital i’s - not lower cased L’s on the word Full.

Dude has since vanished. :angryfire:

Damn dude. That seems to be a pretty sophisticated scamming method….and totally f’d. It’s sad you can just never trust anything these days (outside of present company, obviously).

Yeah - I’ve tried everything to find the dude and it’s basically a waste of time - even worse, Reddit has no way to report scammers and once $$ are transferred for most money apps, you can’t get it back.

Coincidentally, I’ve just started using those apps instead of cash or money orders… That’s not why I got scammed, of course, but if I had sent him money through the mail at least I’d have his address and could go to his house to ask him politely to return my pesos..

I view Reddit as a cesspool and this confirms that for me.

And yeah…it sucks even further you ALWAYS only do MO or cash…and now this happens. I feel for you man.

That’s awful. I have about 15 watches I want to sell but I refuse to do business anywhere but here.

^^^ good call.

I’ve given away more watches than I’ve sold in the last year - Henry and i gave away probably 30 watches combined and a dozen or so knives to young Sailors - feels great to give stuff away. That said, i wear my U50 and Garmins almost exclusively and still need to sell a Resco and a couple of others but never doing business again on Reddit…

Ah damn. Sorry to hear it, Paul. Been scammed before and it SUCKS. Sucks to lose the money for sure, but the worst part is just feeling like someone pulled one over on you.

Wish the worst for that scum.

I’m sorry to hear this, Paul.

I’m not sure what you could’ve done. I recently sold a watch on WUS to a low post count buyer and was so concerned I initially declined the sale. It was only after I got him to connect with me on LinkedIn that I went through with the sale.

When it comes to online buying and selling, I feel like reputation through forum participation is the only factor you can count on.

FWIW, the LinkedIn thing isn’t perfect, but it should give you enough information to track the person down for a face to face discussion if necessary.

Yeah, When I buy a watch now I pretty much know that I need to keep it unless I would sell it here.... or someplace low risk like Crown & Caliber.

Sorry to hear that Paul.
I’m still not comfortable buying watches on Reddit, even though I see good deals here and there.

Been there, done that and fortunately PayPal G&S bailed me out and came thru with all the funds back to my account.

I know they doesn’t help you and it’s not a good feeling at all.

That is just crazy Paul, so sorry. And you know I was thinking. about scammers and two
things about them. One, why don’t they get a life and just leave people alone? And two,
how do they live with themselves right?! I mean it’s a New Year, and we all wish each other
a Happy, and healthy year, and then there are all all of these heartless soulless individuals
doing this. It’s something that I really have never understood. And I can’t stand how so
many countless good people as yourself are affected by scams every year.

Honestly, I wish I could snap my fingers and all these kinds of things would stop in life.
Or that there would be a way that people would not be able to get away with such
things. Because then they would stop if they could be tracked.

Really am sorry Paul. But thanks for telling us about it, or shining a light !

Reddit is the worst website on the internet.

You can create accounts with a fake email all day long. And I mean, like, not an actual valid email address... something like "qwdbkweryuigrbjhdf@tghrtyfrktu.derp" will work immediately without verification.

I just did it to illustrate: https://imgur.com/a/QEWRtqn
