The mission timer: Sinn EZM1, Rescued Bape Edition
My partner Lisa and I step off on February 20th from Amicalola Falls GA on a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Since everything that goes with us is carried on our backs, I had to settle on a single time piece for the trip and decided to go with the EZM1 I picked up from Seth, (Lisa is wearing an ABC watch). Since its return from Sinn it has proven deadly accurate, is light weight, and easy to read. The only decision left is strap or bracelet and I'm likely to go with the bracelet though I like having a button compass on my wrist when hiking. Obviously I'll be posting even less frequently than usual.
We figure somewhere between 5 and 6 months to complete the hike. If you want to check on our progress now and again we will be posting occasional videos on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@LisaandPete

Godspeed. Have not done the whole trail, but Katahdin is a magical place. Looking forward to seeing you next to this sign later this summer.

Have a great hike. Thought about doing the pacific coast trail when I lived in California but never got around to it. They had a news story about a daughter and mom who hiked that trail your doing mom was about as old as me they did it in 5 months her mom had a few falls due to the rocky sections of the trail stitches in the head it did not stop her.

Safe travels.
Put in some shoulderless spring bars with .09 tips, then a Zulu strap with your compass. When you return you can snip out the spring bars with a pair of side cutters. Easy and most secure. I’d wear a spare Zulu opposite wrist or strapped to pack.

Wow, 5-6 months. Thats ballzy, safest of travels. Along Paul's suggestions, perhaps a solar quartz. All the best. J

Safe travels!
Maybe we can set up a “call tree” amongst the Dub if you need support while in our respective areas. I can help if you get stuck while in NH.
Be careful in Maine. You’ll be thinking you’re nearing the end, but actually you’ll be crossing some pretty remote territory.

Good luck! My BiL did it years ago and it changed his life for the better.
Great idea! I'm an hour away but that's not far from the MD portion
Re: The Mission: Summit Mt. Katahdin by August 31
No kidding. Just driving you think you're somewhat close once you get into Maine and it's still many many many hours away.

I used to know a guy who was a head honcho in the paper maker's union. He worked in the mill up in Madawaska, Maine (which is a little town right on the Canadian border).
I remember him telling me he had to drive to union meetings in Philadelphia. He said when he got to Kittery, Maine, he was about halfway there.

Miilinocket/Baxter State Park is about 9.5-10 hours from me in Central NJ. It's about 5.5 to the Maine border. Our other favorite place in Maine, Acadia, is about 9 hours. We did a power trip once with a few days in Baxter and then a few days in Acadia. Quite the Maine grand tour.Ryeguy wrote: ↑Mon Feb 13, 2023 6:24 amI used to know a guy who was a head honcho in the paper maker's union. Nice! My brother is an avid hiker and has done the full AT. Quite a trip. I picked him and his girlfriend up somewhere in PA to let them stock up on provisions and such, and let's just say I was sorry I hadn't made them ride in the back of the truck lol. I also sent supplies to him at a couple post offices along the way.

Sounds like an amazing trip. Wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for all the well wishes and the solid suggestions fellas. I thought about a Garmin or variant, but we each have a cell phone with pretty awesome mapping apps, and I will be carrying a Garmin inReach satellite communicator for emergencies and for those areas with no cell service (rare, even in Maine). Carry much more than that, and keeping things charged becomes a problem, even with battery packs - heavy muthas. We've hiked sections of the trail in GA, PA, NH, (including Mt.Washington), and ME, so have a good idea of what to expect (the only easy day was yesterday, lol).
I really like the idea of the shoulder-less spring bars but I already sent the whole watch box off to storage and there isn't time to order any. Very well may go with the two strap option though. We pretty much have the supply chain set up, with family and friends sending us food, etc. every few days. In addition, the trail crosses through or near towns about once a week that have developed quite the cottage industry in support of through-hikers. Still we appreciate the offer of support from those that are "near" the trail - you never can have too many friends. Anyone that wishes to join us for a few miles is more than welcome!
If I spot any interesting watches along the trail, I'll be sure to post 'em here. Thanks again y'all.

It took someone with a brass pair to get up Katahdin in those conditions!
