What’s your Grail and your dream Grail?

Post by Wario406 » Fri Jul 01, 2022 12:50 pm

2 simple questions.

1. What’s your “today” grail watch that’s in your current collection, sold, or in reach?

2. What’s your dream grail watch?

Mine are:
1. My Omega 2254.5 - I just can’t say enough great things about this watch.

2. PLANET OCEAN 600M CO‑AXIAL CHRONOMETER CHRONOGRAPH 45.5 MM

My “within reach” grail is a Rolex Daydate. My actual grail is probably a Patek PC chronograph of some sort. If not that, then probably a NOS zenith daytona in yellow gold.

Maybe I’m lucky or maybe I have modest wants, but I already own all of the watches I’ve ever wanted except for white dial ceramic Daytona that I’m standing in line for at my AD. Other than that I have obtained every watch I fell in love with

As for “grail” that I own, I’d have say my SAL017.
28F4314B-E901-422B-AC2D-4BA6E225534C.jpeg
It is admittedly a pretty basic watch, but it wears so well. It isn’t any one big thing that makes it so good in my opinion, but rather a bunch of little things that add up.

The fact it has almost doubled in price since I bought it new a few years ago doesn’t hurt either.

As for “grail grail”, I guess I would say the Rolex 116619LB “Smurf”. If I’m truly dreaming, it would be a hybrid with the 116619LB blue dial on the slimmer cased / new movement 126619LB.

The reality, though, is I just have too many other interests to ever see me spending $40K on a watch.

To me, that watch exists more has a “museum” piece, to be admired from afar and not worn. It is cool to know it exists, but not for me.

I don’t really have a “grail” as I hate the term, and it’s been taken out of context so much.
To me a grail is almost unattainable because of either price or quantity made and under that definition, there isn’t one watch in that space I would want.

As far as a watch that I really want that I don’t have, one that would make me very happy and get a lot of wrist time, it would be this Bell and Ross.

The 116600 that I bought BNIB at a steep discount in 2016 and then traded for a new 114060 (that I no longer own) plus cash in 2018.

Love that B&R Military. I tried a few places, but it was pretty limited and sold out everywhere apparently. Hope they pop up someday.

I passed on a Tribute DSA a long time ago, and really really wish I hadn’t.

Maybe a Euro dial will shake loose

Grail in current collection is my Tactico TC2. Took a year to track this one down, it's a keeper.

That JLC is pretty awesome. Why the two crowns?

I've been very fortunate with my collection and have many grail worthy pieces. I'd like to eventually attain:

6538 or 5510 Submariner or equivalent big crown Tudor Sub
Platnium with ice blue day-date
16618 with blue transitioning to purple dial

Until then. . . My current short list:
925 Tudor BB or an original snowflake (even service dial is fine as long as lume plots are square) (I keep going to purchase the 925 Tudor, but can't get over snowflake hands with round lume plots.)
Omega 300 9kt bronze gold

What a terrific question Mike, as well as some amazing grails above. :salute:

I may have to cop out on what is my grail sir. Because I sincerely, am not sure
picking one is possible. ..Once I pick one, it could make another feel left out.

However, maybe I can make up for it by having several dream grails. ;)

..And then there are a thousand others from basically any, and all of the brands past,
and present out there Mike. :)

The second crown moves that triangle near the center of the dial

Currently in my collection, I guess my Rolex Exp 2- white dial would be my “grail”…

Pretty happy with what I have-
Dream wise- 3 hand A&P Royal Oak or Rolex White Gold Day/Date.

Grail in my collection is my 16600. First good watch and still the best watch I’ve ever bought (and I’ve bought a few).
Ultimate grail would probably be a big crown Sub.

I think it might just set the alarm but I’m not very familiar with JLC movements.

Lately my grail feels like "retirement" . I need a vacation.
