New AP Jumbo
New AP Jumbo
I think this is pretty cool. I'm sure it will be impossible to get at MSRP, but I couldn't afford it regardless, even in stainless.

It looks great. Kudos to them for not making it bigger for no reason.

Where does the jumbo name come from?

Re: New AP Jumbo
Maybe due to the new, larger, movement?
I guess I am spoiled by my poverty-spec automatic watches that all include quick-set date features. Reading about the previous generation’s non-quickset date and tiny crown sounds like a real drag.

Re: New AP Jumbo
The nickname dates all the way back to the watch's launch in 1972, and is a result of the 39mm case size, which was large for the time. Apparently, the 'Jumbo' designation came from the attendees at the '72 Basel Fair and not AP.
Re: New AP Jumbo
I’m sure it was/is. No seconds hand and no quickset. The appeal beyond case design and finishing was having such a thin automatic movement.
I think it’s a beautiful watch, but if I had the means to afford a royal oak, I’d go with one that has both a quick set and seconds hand.

Re: New AP Jumbo
Nobody in their right mind would pay that for a 15500. Ok, it's a blue dial which I believe is boutique only and makes it a bit more 'special' than the black dial, but this is insane nonetheless. Takuya must be looking to upgrade his Ferrari

Re: New AP Jumbo
I really wonder. I know there are many people with a lot more money than me, but is there a never ending supply of them just waiting around to pay 10x retail for every decent watch?
New AP Jumbo
Watch prices are insane right now on the secondary.
This AP
Pelagos FXD $7k+
124060 $17k+
Etc etc

Re: New AP Jumbo
It’s true. I just fell into $30k and there’s not a single watch I want to buy. Anything good is crazy expensive. $10k for an nice unpolished 36mm (old version) Explorer? Fuck that.
Re: New AP Jumbo
Was watching tv with my son yesterday, and 24 hours of Daytona was on. I mentioned to him that the winner gets a Rolex Daytona. He asked me if it was a good watch and how much it costs. I said yes, and about 14k retail. He thought that was a lot.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 5:59 pmIt’s true. I just fell into $30k and there’s not a single watch I want to buy. Then I told him it was impossible to get at retail and that if you wanted to buy one today, you’d pay $40k+. At least that’s what I see then listed for.
It’s nuts. I do wonder how many of these watches just sit forever. Like you said, there’s only so many people who can play at that level, especially now that crypto’s taking a nosedive.
Re: New AP Jumbo
I think Omega is still a relative bargain at retail, and you can get them. Though I’ve read that a price hike is imminent, and pre-owned 1861 Speedies go for over $4k now.
One brand worth looking at on the gray/pre-owned market is Blancpain. Good deals on a lot of those for whatever reason.

Re: New AP Jumbo
I like omega, but the regularly speedy pro is my upper bound for size (probably too big in reality). That doesn’t leave many options.JBZ wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 6:50 amI think Omega is still a relative bargain at retail, and you can get them. Re: New AP Jumbo
That surprised me. Buddy said he wanted another 1861 and I told him I could likely get one for 2800-3200. I browsed a bit and told him he’s going to need to add at least $1k to that budget. I found him a 2017 with kit for $4500
Re: New AP Jumbo
Have you tried the new version? Slightly shorter lug to lug and new bracelet design with female end links makes it wear more compact on the wrist. I will probably get another at some point and will definitely be the new one…. But will wait and see if prices settle.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 6:56 amI like omega, but the regularly speedy pro is my upper bound for size (probably too big in reality).
