Help with watch repair

Post by deepcdvr » Wed Oct 20, 2021 4:10 pm

I have a bombfrog (pic below) that I gave to my daughter years ago.

She promptly jumped in the pool with it, crown unscrewed, so auto movement is fried.

I’d like to have someone install a cheap - preferably quartz? - movement in the case because now she “really needs this watch” lol

Thoughts?

Terry’s guy maybe?

Do you know what movement was originally in it? Seiko movements are relatively inexpensive and there are Chinese “equivalents” to most Swiss offerings.

On edit, hang on to the crown and stem. If you can find a replacement movement of the same make and model, you can just swap in the old crown / stem combo.

No, it's not Tourettes.

Original movement was a Miyota 8215
$42.30 on Ebay.

Do you feel comfortable having a bourbon then swapping the movements?

Swapping the crown / stem from the original to the replacement movement keeps you from the most challenging aspect of the job (cutting the stem and remounting the crown to the correct length stem).

I have faith in your abilities to do this. :fro:

If I remember correctly about his previous experiences with bourbon and watch repair, I wouldn't be so sure... 🤣

Wouldn't it be easier just to pick up an inexpensive quartz diver and call it a day?

You are all hilarious! And no I do not feel comfortable swapping out a movement. I opened up the back of a $1200 ginault (using a hole saw because it fit perfectly and had good grip) to adjust the timing and promptly broke the “spinny thing”, causing Terry’s guy to have to replace the movement. Bourbon with dark beer chaser pre watch work is not good. That watch, although beautiful, is basically worthless ;(

There must be a local watchmaker near you buy that 43 buck movement on eBay and have a local watchmaker swap it out. Had one swap out a quartz movement before was cheap due to I supplied the movement. Plus no mail to deal with.

That chunky bezel is less common but there are a other similar quartz options. Cooper and MWC make full PVD knockoffs on the CWC design that are similar to her watch and not overly expensive. Also Luminox could be an option.

I didn’t realize bombfrog was its own brand. I thought it was under the umbrella of one of the strap companies.
